Film documenting Teddy Roosevelt's legacy screened, discussed at Tannery Pond

NORTH CREEK | Theodore Roosevelt's early years as a cowboy in the Dakota Badlands forged his legacy as the nation's greatest conservation President, and on Sept. 13, historian Glenn Pearsall and naturalist Bill McKibben will discuss that legacy as they introduce a film about Roosevelt's formative years. The 2 p.m. event is part of a lecture series called Tannery Talks at the Tannery Pond Center in North Creek. It was in North Creek, where Roosevelt learned that he had become the 26th President. The film, "Theodore Roosevelt: A Cowboy's Ride to the Presidency," was shot on location at the Roosevelt ranch in the Badlands of North Dakota. It was compiled by a group of acclaimed historians that included H.W. Brands and great-grandson Tweet Roosevelt. Admission to the 20-minute discussion by Pearsall and McKibben and the film is free, with a suggested contribution of $10 at the door. The event is part of the North Country's 125th anniversary celebration of Roosevelt's ride from Tahawas to the North Creek train depot, where he learned he was president in 1901.McKibben is a nationally renowned environmental activist who has helped launch two organizations to push for change – Third Act, for those over 60, and 350.org, a global grassroots climate campaign. The author of "The End of Nature" in 1989, he has written 20 books since. He is an environmental professor at Middlebury College. Pearsall is a longtime stock market portfolio manager who grew up in North Creek. He has written several books on local history, including "Echoes in these Mountains," and "Where Men and Mountains Meet." He and his wife, Carol, have been generous donors to numerous North Creek community organizations. Shortly after losing his wife and mother on Valentine's Day 1884, Roosevelt had moved to the Badlands, learned how to ride, shoot and hunt, and developed the traits that made him a national leader. As President, Roosevelt conserved roughly 230 million acres of land for public use. This included 150 national forests, 55 federal bird and game preserves, and five national parks, including Yosemite. In 1905, he created the U.S. Forest Preserve.
