Moriah Labor Day promises strong lineup

PORT HENRY | Moriah's biggest weekend of the year, its three-day Labor Day extravaganza, will soon descend upon the North Country. And after 173 years, the tradition is as strongly anticipated as ever. "There is a lot happening," said Jim Curran, Town Board member and Moriah Chamber of Commerce liaison. "Every corner of town has something going on." Friday, Sept. 4 will kick the weekend off with the Port Henry Waterfront Farmers Market at Bridgeview Harbour Marina. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Blues Without Borders will perform live as market patrons enjoy food trucks and vendors and a final stroll through the market for the 2026 season. The following afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 5, the M3 Music Fest will return. This year, the festival will be held at the Port Henry Beach and see four bands take the stage for the free concert. From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Willsboro's Marcus Carson, URSA and the Major Key, Mountain Echo, and Hodgepodge will deliver enthusiastic performances guaranteed to get people out of their chairs and moving. The new beach location will also allow audience members to enjoy a front row seat to the firework display over Lake Champlain that begins at dusk. Food vendors and crafters will also be on scene to fill out the afternoon and evening. Sunday, Sept. 6 will be the crowning glory for the weekend. At 8 a.m., registration for the Labor Day Dash opens, with the race 5K beginning at 9 a.m. from Moriah Central School and ending at Bridgeview Harbour Marina. The Kids Dash N' Splash will follow immediately after at 10 a.m. Once everyone dries off, residents and visitors will reconvene for the Labor Day Parade at 2 p.m., with lineup beginning at 1 p.m. This year, Joann Podres has been selected for the Grand Marshal. "Joann is wonderful," Curran said. "She is treasurer of the food pantry, she is the VFW Auxiliary President, and is an Eagles Committee member. She's a great person." Curran said this year the parade will also feature a panel of judges who will be voting on the best float. Following the parade, there won't be any to head home because the day won't yet be over. On Church Street, a car show featuring over 50 cars from the 1960s and 1970s will see Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, and other memorable vintage vehicles parked and ready to be viewed. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Port Henry Field, a chicken barbecue dinner enticing people to enjoy a night away from their own kitchens or backyard grills. The Ponders will perform live music in the field, and bounce houses for kids and other food vendors will also be on the scene. Also going on throughout the weekend will be Sherman Free Public Library's annual Basket Raffle and Book Sale, with ticket sales beginning Thursday, Sept. 3, with the drawing will take place on Sunday. "Volunteers are always welcome to help," Curran encouraged. "We are looking for volunteers for after the parade if people are interested."
