Newcomb's TR Weekend celebrates Theodore Roosevelt's ADK connection

NEWCOMB | It's been 125 years since Teddy Roosevelt was called to the White House (via Buffalo) to become the 26th President of the united states when President William Mckinley was shot Sept. 11, 1901. All over this neck of the Adirondacks, small towns have been cooking up special events commemorating this pivotal event, known as Teddy Roosevelt's Midnight Ride to the Presidency. As one of them, Newcomb has planned a special TR Weekend, Sept. 11-13. Though Friday's events are not specifically related to TR, Saturday and Sunday's events will feature TR-specific events as well as lots of other fun things to do. A crafts fair, golf tourney, tours and wagon rides to Great Camp Santanoni, a family-friendly catch-and-release fishing competition, interpreter-led hike up Goodnow Mountain's fire tower with panoramic views, Timber Sports Scrimmage, a vintage car show and live music all add to the festive feel of Newcomb's TR Weekend. SCHEDULE Saturday, Sept. 12 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Santanoni Wagon Ride (TR Wagon Ride RSVP 2026) at Great Camp Santanoni Enjoy a free wagon ride into the Great Camp Santanoni with a Santanoni tour guide. Bring lunch, comfortable walking shoes, and ride by horse-drawn wagon. 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Climb Goodnow Mountain, Goodnow Mountain Guided or self-paced hike up Goodnow Mountain offering panoramic views from the fire tower. Meet Interpreter Mike Gooden will share some history and facts. 6 - 8 p.m. Reenactment & Keynote Speaker, Newcomb Central School Auditorium. Watch a reenactment of Theodore Roosevelt being sworn in as the 26th President following his famous midnight ride from Lake Tear of the Clouds. Speaker Joe Wiegand will present following the ceremony. Sunday, Sept. 13 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Theodore Roosevelt's Midnight Ride Bus Tour Historic Bus Tour: Board the bus at 9:30 a.m. in the Seeley Exhibit Hall at the Newcomb Community Center parking lot. The tour returns to Newcomb at approximately 3:30 p.m. Stops Include MacNaughton Cottage, Tahawus Club, Theodore Roosevelt Marker on 28N, Aiden Lair, Minerva Community Center (for lunch), and the North Creek Museum and Depot, where TR boarded his train.
