Simpson calls for legislative oversight of N.Y. voter registration systems

ALBANY | Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C-Adirondack) joined Assembly colleagues as a co-signer of a formal request calling on the Assembly Election Law and Ways and Means Committees to hold a joint public hearing on the security and fiscal oversight of New York's voter registration systems. The request follows the recent disclosure that a software failure involving New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission registered approximately 6,600 non-citizens to vote, with hundreds ultimately casting ballots. The same vendor at the center of that failure, IDEMIA, holds active contracts with New York state agencies totaling roughly $579.5 million, including approximately $24.7 million with the Department of Motor Vehicles. "New York taxpayers have invested hundreds of millions of dollars with the same company involved in New Jersey's breakdown," said Simpson. "We have a clear responsibility to make sure our systems are protected and that every registration is legitimate. This is about basic accountability and making sure New Yorkers can trust the process." The letter emphasizes that the request does not claim New York has experienced the same failure. Rather, it reflects the Legislature's constitutional responsibility to exercise meaningful oversight, safeguard taxpayer investments and ensure New Yorkers maintain full confidence in the integrity and security of our election system. Public polling consistently shows strong support for stronger election safeguards, including photo identification requirements, which routinely receive support from a majority of Americans across party lines. At the same time, recent surveys indicate many voters remain concerned about whether ineligible individuals are fully prevented from participating. Simpson and the co-signers are asking the committees to examine current safeguards against erroneous registrations, any audits that have been or will be conducted and the overall performance and fiscal oversight of the systems supporting New York's voter registration infrastructure.
