New executive director named to YMCA childhood center

PLATTSBURGH | The YMCA has named North Country native Jacqueline Kemp, Ph.D., executive director of its early childhood development center, bringing more than two decades of experience in early childhood education, child development and program leadership to the organization. Dr. Kemp returns to her home state and community after leading university-based early childhood education programs and mentoring educators in California and Utah. As executive director, she will oversee education, care, staff training, and all other operations at the Center, including supporting educators, building relationships with families, and helping ensure children receive high-quality early learning experiences. "I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return home to the North Country and serve the children and families in this community," Dr. Kemp said. "Throughout my career, I have seen the important role early childhood education plays in helping children learn, grow and develop strong foundations for their future. I look forward to rooting my passion and work in this community, building relationships with families, and helping nurture the next generation of curious and confident learners." Most recently, Dr. Kemp served as director of the Eccles Early Childhood Development Laboratory School at Salt Lake Community College, where she led the program through NAEYC reaccreditation in 2023, a process that requires centers to meet rigorous, research-based standards to ensure high-quality experiences for children in early learning programs. "Jacquie brings extensive experience in early childhood education, program development and leadership, and community engagement to our community," said YMCA Board Chair Courtney DeLaura. "Her background and commitment to serving children and families align with the passion and mission of our Y and early childhood learning center. Dr. Kemp's child-first mentality builds a foundation for continued growth of this Center, and will ensure we can continue providing early learning opportunities for families throughout the North Country." Previously, Dr. Kemp held leadership positions at Santa Clara University and the University of Utah, where she oversaw early childhood education centers, managed operations and budgets, mentored educators, and partnered with families to create developmentally appropriate learning environments for children to learn and thrive. Dr. Kemp earned a doctorate in education from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She also holds master's degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah. Kemp is an active member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the International Society for Conversation Analysis (ISCA), the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and the National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers (NCCCC). Dr. Kemp's appointment marks a new chapter for the Early Childhood Development Center as the YMCA continues its commitment to providing quality early childhood education and supporting children and families throughout the North Country.
