Kathy Ford's paintings featured at ADK Artists Guild this August

SARANAC LAKE | The Adirondack Artists Guild will present Here and Away, a featured exhibition of watercolor and acrylic paintings by Kathy Ford, on view in the gallery throughout the month of August. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m., rather than the Guild's usual First Friday reception. Visitors are invited to meet the artist, view the new work, and enjoy light refreshments. Here and Away is about the places that shape us. Some are close to home, some are far away, and some live mostly in memory. One of the works in this exhibit is actually one of the first pieces of art Kathy ever made, in 7th grade. It might seem out of place among everything else, but it marks the moment when she first realized that making art mattered. She remembered feeling seen and encouraged, and that feeling has stayed with her. In a way, that piece is her "here"—the place where everything began. From there, Kathy's work naturally grew outward. Many of the paintings in the show are of the Adirondack lakes and mountains she calls home. These are the places she returns to, again and again, both physically and creatively. Other pieces reflect places farther afield, from travels in Italy, Sicily, Key West and elsewhere. They're based on photographs Kathy took of scenes that stopped her in her tracks; moments that spoke to her and asked to be remembered. Even when far from home, Kathy is always looking for that same sense of connection. You'll also see a very personal black and white watercolor, "Fords on a Chevy," painted from a treasured photograph from her spouse's side of the family (the little two-year-old in the center is her husband, Lonnie). This painting reminds her that "here" isn't only a place—it's also the people, stories, and histories we carry with us.
