New vet clinic to open in Au Sable Forks

AU SABLE FORKS | By early fall, a new vet clinic — Valor Mountain Veterinary Services — is expected to open right on Pleasant Street, and Felice Cuomo, DVM, is looking forward to providing high-quality, thoughtful, and compassionate veterinary care throughout the Adirondacks. "I'm very appreciative of the support of the local community," stated Cuomo, who studied at both SUNY Stony Brook and the University of Minnesota to become a veterinarian and who has been practicing veterinary medicine professionally for the last 13 years. "Everyone has been amazingly helpful, including numerous town officials, in guiding me and offering positive encouragement." That support and encouragement have been ongoing since Cuomo acquired the historic building, which was built in 1825 and once used as a church, school, and meeting hall for the Knights of Columbus, in May. Ever since then, Cuomo, with help from family and friends, has been hard at work getting the building ready to open by early fall. Once completed, the veterinary clinic will feature a formal enryway/foyer that will lead to a rectangular waiting room. To the right will be the reception area, while to the left will be a bathroom. There will be three examination rooms, with a large space in the back for surgeries and other lab-based procedures. Cuomo is striving to ensure that all local dogs and cats receive the best possible care using modern technology and medicine; however, she's also striving to maintain the historical charm of the existing building by doing some preservation work like refinishing the existing wood floors and adding plexiglass to the windows to protect them while also improving energy efficiency. In addition to serving dogs and cats, Cuomo, who has a background in equine sports medicine, would like to eventually offer dental work for local horses. "I want to do what I can to change the narrative that I feel I'm seeing in veterinary medicine," Cuomo said. "I really want to focus on the quality of care — having adequate time for patients, not making them feel rushed, and making time to educate clients while also trying to extend some compassion." Valor Mountain Veterinary Services is not yet ready to start booking appointments, and Cuomo anticipates being open full days Monday through Thursday with a half day on Friday, though that has yet to be finalized.
