49th Mayor's Cup Regatta delivers tight races, new winners

PLATTSBURGH | Favorable weather, close competition and an increase in Canadian and first-time participants highlighted the 49th annual Mayor's Cup Regatta, hosted Saturday, July 11, by the Sunrise Rotary Club of Plattsburgh at Plattsburgh City Beach and the Plattsburgh City Marina. Known as the sailing tradition of Lake Champlain, the Mayor's Cup Regatta has served as the signature event of Plattsburgh's summer festival since 1978, attracting sailors from across the region for spirited competition on the lake. "Weather offered a great day of sailing on the water, with sunny skies and pleasant winds," event organizer Dr. Kjell Dahlen said. "We were pleased to see an increase in the number of Canadian entries. Also, excited to see an increase in the number of new entries." Craig Meyerson of Peru paced the Spinnaker Division's A Fleet aboard Souvenir, posting a corrected time of 1 hour, 48 minutes and 59 seconds. The crew of Rogue, representing South Burlington, Vermont, followed in 1:50:03, while Jeff Hill of Shelburne, Vermont, guided Foxy Lady to third in 1:50:06. Plattsburgh entries also featured prominently, with Raz Pascalau finishing fifth aboard Cryptic, Ed and John Trombley placing sixth aboard Odinn, and Chris Duley taking eighth aboard Polar Express. Other Spinnaker fleet winners included Benedek Erdos of South Burlington, Vermont, aboard In Progress in the B Fleet with a corrected time of 1:51:51 and Thomas Porter and Eric Hart of Burlington, Vermont, aboard Osprey in the C Fleet with a corrected time of 1:55:19. In the Jib & Main Division, Cameron Giezendanner of Underhill, Vermont, won the A Fleet aboard Schuss with a corrected time of 1:32:18, edging Eric Tremblay of Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides, Québec, aboard Wildlife X by 16 seconds. Montréal's Miro Balcar finished third aboard Endo-X. Sean Linskey of Waitsfield, Vermont, claimed the Jib & Main B Fleet title aboard Salsa with a corrected time of 1:37:06. Julie Trottier of Williston, Vermont, finished second aboard Meridian in 1:38:52, followed by Bill Rogers of Waitsfield aboard Oriel in 1:39:23. In a Facebook post after the race, Linskey credited his crew and reflected on reaching a milestone as a skipper. "I'm incredibly proud of our team and of this boat," Linskey wrote. "Having an amazing crew on board makes all the difference, and this win was truly a team effort." Michael Hands of Gansevoort captured the Multihull Division title aboard CICO with a corrected time of 19:53:17. Tim McKegney of West Lebanon finished second aboard Shoshin in 20:15:40, while Rob MacDonald of Niskayuna placed third aboard Joy and Peril in 20:21:57. Dahlen said the combination of sunny skies, steady winds and competitive racing made for another successful edition of Lake Champlain's premier sailing event. "It was a closely contested race within each division," Dahlen said. "There were new division winners in spite of returning defenders."
