Summer lecture series explores pivotal moments of Roosevelt's life

NORTH CREEK | The North Creek Depot Museum launched its summer lecture series commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt's "Night Ride to the Presidency" on July 8 with an engaging presentation by author and Emmy Award-winning journalist Mary Calvi. The event took place at the Tannery Pond Center in North Creek. Calvi, the author of If a Poem Could Live and Breathe, spoke to the audience about the extensive research that underpins her acclaimed historical novel, which was based on long-overlooked love letters exchanged between a young Theodore Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee. Among those attending the Calvi presentation was Robin Jay of Gem Radio Theatre, who has often portrayed Roosevelt's second wife, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt. "I thought that Calvi's presentation was interesting," she said, noting that the two wives were quite different from one another. Speaking of the letters, which are quoted extensively in the novel, she said, "The depth of Roosevelt's love for Alice really shone through." Jay has been commissioned by the Depot Museum to develop a radio play based on Roosevelt's historic journey to the presidency, which took place in the Adirondacks. The public is welcome to attend a free performance of this radio play on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at Tannery Pond Center. Calvi's book, suggested Depot Board member Linda Quintavalle, gives readers insights into the Gilded Age as well as into a man widely revered as a mythic, heroic figure. "The book makes TR seem more human," she said. "At times he was a silly, romantic, young college student." The lecture series continues throughout the summer, with presentations being held at 7:30 p.m. at Tannery Pond on July 15, 23, and 29; Aug. 6, 12, and 20; and Sept. 1. Topics range from the rise of Roosevelt's political career to TR's passion for birding in the Adirondacks to the firearms he owned and gifted to others.
