New art store opens in Schroon

SCHROON | Heather Termini saw a void that could be filled, and could be filled well. Schroon Lake's scenic beauty and small-town charm may leave people- both year-round visitors and seasonal residents alike- yearning to create with their hands or pick up a new artistic hobby. Termini's new Main Street business, Art By The Lake, will be taking that concept and running with it; the new shop was created for that very purpose. "Schroon is just so beautiful, it's like a Hallmark movie," Termini, Art By The Lake's proprietor, expressed. "Nature is everywhere, and people get really inspired- nobody has time to do their craft, but I feel like you come up here and you have the time, so I wanted to support that inspiration." Termini's vision was to provide a space for the community in which a variety of art classes could be held, allowing folks to get off of their phones and become more attuned with various art forms of their choosing. Art is stress relief, art is therapy, art is passion, and art is expression. Originally from the Hudson Valley, Termini had been visiting Schroon for the past 12 years with her family and had become taken with the area. She operated a retail store down on Florida's Sanibel Island, but between the heat and the hurricanes, the Adirondacks ultimately looked like a more appealing to call 'home.' "This community is such a lovely place," Termini shared. "All the main street businesses are so supportive; that is something that was so refreshing." Owning the building that the business now also calls home, Termini took a thoughtful approach to the design of the 1200 square foot interior, embracing the completely blank canvas of space and infusing a feel of warmth and sophisticated ecclecticness. "The retail aspect is so interesting to me of creating an environment of a place people want to be using sight, music, and smells," Termini admitted. Opening over Memorial Day Weekend of this year, Termini said business has already been promising. Customers are delighting in the thoughtfully curated selection of arts and crafts- the fine yarn assortment has already become a fan favorite- and other art supplies intended to awaken the right side of the brain. "We really invested in the yarn and the tools," said Termini. "Knitters now don't have to travel, especially with JoAnn Fabrics having closed." According to Termini, there is currently a craft wave happening with the lat teem/early 20s demographic where needling pastimes like knitting and crocheting are enjoying a renaissance (according to the Wall Street Journal, in 20025 Mintel reported that 86% of Gen Z-ers participate in crafting, making them the most engaged generation). "So many studies are being done about knitting, how it is so beneficial to your neurological health- using your hands, counting, it keeps the brain fresh," Termini said. Art By The Lake's inventory also includes air dry clay, calligraphy, watercolor, acrylic, wood carving blocks and knives and books, cross stitch, knitting and crocheting tools, felting, basket weaving, and stationary. "We are not like Arlene's for professional artists, " Termini explained. "But we would love to have feedback on products people would like to see us carry." Art classes, of course, will be a large portion of the business, with class offerings just posted already filling up. "Classes are taught by instructors who specialize in their respective fields," Termini said. "We will have weekly classes for kids and adults. For the month of July we have a watercolor class, a meditation class, beading, even a Miami-based plein air artist will be here for the month." Termini anticipates evening classes, like sip and soaps, girls' nights, and date nights. Art By The Lake will provide yet another interesting activity to do and a new place to visit along the strip, continuing to enhance Schroon Lake as a year-round destination. "This summer is about trying everything and leaning into what is working better than others," Termini revealed. The goal, she said, is to be open year-round (or at least through Christmas) as long as the business is supporting it. "It's fun to start something from the ground up and get to create and model it how you want," Termini noted of what has excited her in her journey. "We welcome people to have a new experience with us." To register for a class or to shop, please visit artbythelakeschroon.com. Follow the shop on Facebook and Instagram @artbythelake_schroon.
