Coyle rides Ariso to $100K top prize in Grand Prix of Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID | Jordan Coyle of Ireland rode Ariso to victory Sunday in the $100,000 FEI 3* Grand Prix of Lake Placid, closing the first week of the Lake Placid Horse Shows. Coyle topped a field of 35 horses at the North Elba Showgrounds, where the two-week competition continues through July 5. The event is sanctioned by the U.S. Equestrian Federation and the International Equestrian Federation. Coyle was one of nine riders to advance to the jump-off after completing the 16-effort first-round course, designed by Nick Granat, without faults. Six-time U.S. Olympian McLain Ward set the early standard with a clean jump-off ride in 41.80 seconds aboard First Lady, owned by Robin Parsky. Coyle, riding Ariso, a 15-year-old Swedish Warmblood owned by Elan Farm, answered with a clean round in 41.23 seconds to secure the victory. It was the pair's second major win of the weekend after capturing Friday's $45,000 Wölffer Estate Vineyard FEI 3* Jump-Off Class. Ward finished second, while Pieter De Brabandere of Belgium placed third aboard Dothraki Warlord, owned by Maarten Huygens, with a clean ride in 42.15 seconds. "You never know in this sport. Everything has such fine margins that you never actually know till it's over what's going to happen," Coyle said. "If you can beat McLain, then that's always a good gauge that you were pretty fast." "This is for sure the form of his life at the moment," Coyle said of Ariso. "He won some big classes for me in his younger days, but then he had a few years of not much pressure and not much being asked of him. In the past year, he's come back to being probably better and more consistent than he ever has been. It's really quite exciting." Sunday also featured two classes in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series. JJ Torano won the $10,000 Mirror Lake Inn/The Cottage Café 1.35m SJHOF Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic aboard Mr. Worldwide, while Jole Kosloske captured the $15,000 FarmVet 1.45m SJHOF Junior/Amateur Jumper Classic aboard Crystal Claire. Other Sunday winners included Eva Tucci aboard Princip F. Damaard in The Hooker Family 1.15m Junior Jumper Classic, Jennifer Schechter aboard Can Can De San Isidro in the Higher Ground Farm 1.15m Amateur Jumper Classic, Kendall Casaccio aboard Freya D'Ambel in the Northland NAL Adult Amateur Hunter Classic and Grace Wilson aboard Ocean Road in the Dr. Tracie Glicker Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic. The day also included the Lead Line Class, presented by McLain Ward Inc., and the Saratoga Horseworks Parade of Champions, which recognized the week's division champions.
