Mariners sweep Vermont teams for 2-0 week

PLATTSBURGH | The Clinton County Mariners bounced back from a 1-3 showing at the Kingston-Saugerties Father's Day tournament with a perfect 2-0 week. Clinton County went unbeaten against Vermont American Legion Baseball and Green Mountain Baseball League competition. The Mariners (7-5) will next face Essex Post 91 in a rematch before turning their attention to the annual Floyd Rock Memorial Tournament July 3-5. JUNE 24 CLINTON COUNTY 11, ESSEX 2 PLATTSBURGH | Diego Rios struck out 11 over a complete-game effort as Clinton County rolled to an 11-2 victory over Vermont's Essex Post 91 on June 24. Rios allowed six hits, two runs and three walks over seven innings. Essex took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chris Morgan singled home a run, but Clinton County answered in the bottom half on Wyatt Barton's RBI groundout. The Mariners broke the game open in the third, scoring five runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead. Nate Baker's two-run groundout highlighted the inning. Louis Barnard-Purvis took the loss for Essex, allowing six runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings while striking out three and walking one. Clinton County finished with 12 hits. Gabe Moore drove in three runs while going 2-for-4. Braeden Calkins, Moore, Seth Petrashune and Brandon Reyes each had two hits. Nico Caiano and Alec Davis collected two hits apiece for Essex. Barnard-Purvis and Morgan each drove in a run. JUNE 23 CLINTON COUNTY 16, CHAMPLAIN 6 PLATTSBURGH | Clinton County erupted for 12 runs in the sixth inning to pull away for a 16-6 victory over the Green Mountain Baseball League's Champlain Mariners on June 23. The inning began with an error before bases-loaded walks to Landon Duprey, Nate Baker and Bostyn Duquette forced home three runs. Diego Rios followed with an RBI single, Jackson Dorsett added another bases-loaded walk, and a second error brought home another run. Braeden Calkins capped a two-run single, Gabe Moore added an RBI single, and Duprey finished the rally with a two-run homer. Clinton County opened the scoring in the first on Calkins' RBI single. Champlain tied the game in the fourth on a double-play ball, then took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when an error scored a run before Carter Tosch added a sacrifice fly. Clinton County answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Donnie Mitchell, Moore and Seth Petrashune each scored to regain the lead. Duprey earned the win with four innings of relief, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out four and walking three. Duquette started and gave up one run on one hit over three innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Cam Bushey took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in four innings. Clinton County collected 13 hits. Calkins went 4-for-4, while Mitchell added two hits. The Mariners also drew 10 walks, with Baker, Dorsett, Duquette and Duprey taking two apiece. Nicky Elderton led Champlain by going 2-for-4. Skyler Bushey, James Chagnon, Zavier Barnes and Riley McDade each drove in a run. Both teams turned one double play.
