Stan and Chris Ransom named 2026 Spirit of Ianelli honorees

PLATTSBURGH | The Sunrise Rotary Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival Committee has announced that Stan and Chris Ransom have been selected as the 2026 Spirit of Ianelli Award honorees. The Spirit of Ianelli Award was established in 2010 in honor of the late Mayor John Ianelli, former Mayor of the City of Plattsburgh and co-founder of the Mayor's Cup Regatta in 1978. This honor is bestowed upon one individual or individuals – sailor or landlubber – who exemplifies the same "community does matter" spirit that inspired Mayor Ianelli over 45 years ago, empowering our lake community to thrive, not only on race day, but every day. Mayor Ianelli believed that strong communities are built by neighbors who care deeply about one another. Stan and Chris Ransom have lived that philosophy for decades. Their generosity, creativity, and dedication perfectly reflect the spirit this award was established to celebrate. Stan and Chris Ransom have been married for 46 years. They both share a strong appreciation and passion for music, culture, history and community. Chris was the Medical Librarian at the CVPH Health Network for thirty-three years and Stan is well known for his lengthy career as a folk musician, his time as director of the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System and the Plattsburgh Public Library, and his work researching and raising awareness of Jupiter Hammon, the first Black poet published in the United States. Both have been active members of the volunteer Battle of Plattsburgh Committee since its inception in the late 1990's. For over 25 years, the couple has developed, organized and managed dozens of traditional games from the early 1800's for kids to experience in groups or individually during the annual reenactment festivities. "The Ransoms have created a lasting legacy that extends far beyond any single event," said Wanda J. Carroll, President of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Plattsburgh. "Through music, storytelling, education, and volunteer service, they have inspired countless children and adults to appreciate the rich history and traditions of the North Country. Their impact is measured not only in years of service, but in the lives they have enriched." Stan's personal motto, "Act enthusiastic and you will become enthusiastic," has become more than words—it reflects the energy and optimism that he and Chris have shared with our community for decades. Their enthusiasm has inspired generations of volunteers, families, and children to celebrate the history, culture, and spirit of the North Country. The Sunrise Rotary Club will formally present the award to Stan and Chris Ransom at the Mayor's Cup Regatta Awards ceremony taking place at the Plattsburgh Boat Basin on Saturday, July 11 at 6 p.m. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend the outdoor ceremony and show their support of Stan and Chris Ransom. In addition, Stan and Chris Ransom will be recognized at the City of Plattsburgh's 4th of July parade ceremonies in downtown Plattsburgh and featured on the Sunrise Rotary float. The parade begins at 2:30 p.m. on July 4.
