Column: A Full Circle Impact

Throughout my working life, I routinely supported United Way through payroll deductions. In all transparency, I did so because representatives from the organization came to my workplace and encouraged employees to contribute. It seemed like the right thing to do, so I signed up and continued giving for nearly 40 years. Despite that long commitment, I never fully understood the scope and impact of United Way's work. I knew it raised money to help people in need, but I viewed it primarily as a fundraising organization that distributed charitable dollars to those in need. I had little understanding of the many ways it serves our communities. In retirement, I was fortunate to join United Way of the Adirondack Region as a Grant Specialist. This role has given me a first-hand look at the incredible work being done throughout the North Country. Now that I am "inside" the organization, I see how a small but mighty team transforms community generosity into meaningful action and lasting change. United Way of the Adirondack Region raises essential funds to support programs that address some of our region's most pressing challenges, but fundraising is only part of the story. United Way also serves as a convener, connector, and catalyst for change. The organization brings together nonprofits, businesses, healthcare providers, and community leaders to identify needs and develop collaborative solutions. From promoting volunteerism and disaster preparedness to addressing poverty, housing instability, and financial hardship, United Way works alongside community partners to improve lives and strengthen our region. Through information and referral services, collaborative initiatives, and strategic partnerships, individuals and families are connected to resources that help them overcome challenges and achieve greater stability. What has impressed me most is United Way's ability to bring people together around a common purpose. By fostering collaboration and building strong community partnerships, the organization helps create solutions that no single agency could accomplish alone, providing a safety net for households on the brink of financial instability. Every day, I witness stories of resilience, generosity, and hope. I see families receiving support during difficult times, children gaining access to opportunities they might otherwise miss, and community partners working together to address local needs. Looking back, I am grateful that I chose to support United Way all those years ago, even without fully understanding its impact. Today, I have the privilege of seeing that impact first-hand. It has reinforced my belief that when communities come together to care for one another, remarkable things happen.
