Galway pulls away from Ti in Class C regional

PLATTSBURGH | Ticonderoga was within two runs through three innings on June 5, but Galway steadily pulled away before erupting for eight runs in the seventh to hand the Sentinels an 18-1 loss in a NYSPHSAA Class C softball regional at Plattsburgh High. The Sentinels stayed within striking distance early and trailed just 3-1 after three innings before Galway broke the game open with two runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to build a 10-1 lead. Galway then did nearly one-half of its damage in the seventh inning, sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs on four hits and three Ticonderoga errors. Clara Mitchell ended the frame by getting a lineout to second base with the bases loaded. Ticonderoga scored its lone run in the second inning. With runners on the corners and nobody out, the Sentinels executed a double-steal attempt. The Ticonderoga runner was caught stealing at second base, but the play allowed Zowie Norton to score and cut the deficit to 2-1. The Sentinels were limited to two hits. Mitchell singled in the second inning and Addison Munson led off the fourth with a double. Galway pitcher Emma Menge worked six innings, allowing two hits, one run and five walks while striking out five. "She has a lot more spin on the ball than what we see, especially in our league," Ticonderoga head coach Eric Mullen said. "Speed-wise, we had seen the speed with Tuckahoe and Nichols (at the Mudville Tournament in Herkimer). But it was just the movement and the spin on the ball. We have some good, young pitchers in Section VII, but we don't have a lot of pitchers who can put as much movement on the ball as what she has." Ticonderoga struggled with control in the circle as Mitchell and eighth-grader Lillian Davis combined to issue 13 walks. Mitchell walked seven batters and Davis six. Galway drew leadoff walks to begin the first, second, third and sixth innings. "They're a really good team, and if you give them opportunities to put runners on for free, they make you pay," Mullen said. "They did that with Greenwich last week. They've done it with other teams this year, so we knew that going in. When you walk the leadoff batter every other inning, you put yourself at a disadvantage, and good teams like Galway make you pay for those mistakes. We talked about how you've got to make the other team earn their way on. But the free passes, at this level, you can't have it." The loss closed a successful season for the Sentinels, who finished 17-2 overall and 13-0 in CVAC play. Ticonderoga graduates four seniors: Gracie Patnode, Isabelle Burroughs, Madelyn Drinkwine and Norton. The Sentinels entered the season after graduating CVAC Pitcher of the Year Myleigh Drinkwine and all-CVAC selection Addy Moore, but still won the CVAC Division II title while starting three underclassmen. "The girls will keep working hard," Mullen said. "They'll do their summer ball, travel ball and train in the offseason. We've got some younger girls coming up. We've got some holes to fill in, but I think the future is bright going forward.
