Walls Between Waters mural celebrated in Jay

JAY | It was an evening of celebration Friday when the Walls Between Waters' mural at Ausable Theater was officially dedicated to rounds of applause and community elation. After watching the expansive new colorful addition take shape in recent weeks, community members and local leaders gathered to celebrate the historic public art centerpiece and work of artist Ericka "Miss Teal" Rosendale, complete with live music, food and an excited crowd. North Country Rural Development Coalition extended heartfelt appreciation to Rosendale for sharing her talent and heart, calling it a breathtaking and incredible gift to the community. The mural brings a cool splash of color, story, movement, and memory across downtown Jay with a kingfisher bursting through the water and droplets carrying powerful and serene pieces of local history. Looking closely inside the water droplets, residents can find stories of Jay reflected back: Doris Kenyon, the silent movie star; paper mill employees; Arto Monaco; Land of Make Believe; the J. & J. Rogers Company Mill Building; Rockwell Kent; fly fishing; the Covered Bridge; and the landscape, people, and history that make the town so special. The piece came directly from the themes and stories developed through the Jay Public Art Committee and community process, and Rosendale was credited for bringing them together with beauty, imagination, and care. While the community shared in the excitement watching the mural come to life, they also turned out for an artist talk to learn more about the artist and creative process as Town of Jay Supervisor Jay Stanley, officials, Jay Public Art Committee, Ausable Theater, HCR and the Essex County Land Bank were thanked for their involvement in making the art display a reality. "This is what grassroots revitalization looks like: local people showing up, dreaming big, doing the work, and creating something meaningful for their community. What an absolute dream team," North Country Rural Development Coalition said. "This is what public art is all about: bringing people together, honoring place, and creating something that reflects the stories, beauty, and spirit of our communities."
