SARANAC | Stepping through the entryway at Perry's Farm & Found Market on Parson's Lane bids a walk down memory lane in a beautiful way. This is the Perry's market's first spring and summer season. And their farm, gift and thrift store is chock full of treasures and local treats, baked items and artisan crafts on shelves that take time to explore. It's not for "in a hurry" type of shopping as rooms in what once was a church parsonage are brimming with fresh and vintage items arranged to beguile. Founded by Emily Perry and her husband Ben -- lead builder and maintenance specialist -- the shop came into being through careful, patient planning and extensive restoration, renovation and redecorating that respected the building's late nineteenth century bones. The Perrys purchased the vintage cottage with an eye for context that would support Emily's sheer joy of thrift and useful, beautiful things. Even the building's gingerbread gable trim champions the effort. Interior work began with basics last fall, paint and flooring, the couple said. "I did my first tiling project," Emily said, indicating an evenly tiled wall in what used to be the home's kitchen. "It had been empty for five years," Ben said. "They were happy that she was doing something community-based with the building." "We were waiting for so long, but very pleased to be able to do what we hoped for," Emily said. The cottage's various rooms -- kitchen, dining, living and parlor and former bedrooms upstairs -- provide market space for more than Emily's careful collection of found items. Shelves and cabinets feature handmade candles, homemade breads and baked goods, jellies and soaps, lotions and cleaning supplies. There are spices and spice blends, teas, herbs and more. "We originally looked for property on Route 3 for our ice cream stand," Emily said. "Then we considered this." Perry's original ice cream stand is a pink mobile cart they set up along the road for several seasons. They still have it, but the new ice cream stand -- Sweet Lucy Scoops -- is the perfect pink cottage being built nearly opposite of Tedford's Auto Service. "I started it about three weeks ago," Ben said. The Perrys' daughter Lucy is entirely thrilled with it, he said. Sweet Lucy Scoops should be ready to open in July. Asked about the "found" part of Perry's Farm & Found, Emily said everything is sourced locally from storage, grandparents, family and friends' collections or downsizing. Vintage cookware and glassware, crockery and art is tucked among old-time decor, lamps, boxes, lights and gift items, treasures really, from earlier eras. "I do have vendor booths throughout, but you can see each vignette, each different design they bring here. It all kind of cohesively comes together," Emily said. Kind of like community does and has done for decades around here, settled inside a dynamic of life comings and goings. Emily left a position as a special educator last year to pursue a lifelong passion for found treasure. Farm & Found gives her time for creativity and more time for family. "This time last year, I was writing IEPs," she said. "I have always wanted to have my own store. I knew at some point this was going to be in my life," she mused. "We just kind of evolve at each step." Coming in here is shopping local, she said. "A lot of neighbors and people make unique things and also have full-time jobs. Having a place to showcase their products helps them, too." Bird and a Half Baking has a spot in the kitchen. So does Brainardsville Bake House and Hardscrabble Homestead. There are locally made jams, jellies, herbs and spices. Em's Stems plants are scattered throughout the rooms. And artisan market supplies are ever-changing. "The items are shared and shown in a dynamic way -- it's always changing," Emily said of evolution on the shelves. "We have weekly additions, updates, and products will change with the seasons and holidays. "We've kept prices low and affordable to fit our community," Emily said. Every visit brings surprise wrapped in a sense of adventure. Perry's Farm & Found Market is located at 4 Parson's Lane, just off Route 3 in Saranac. Shop hours open at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and close usually at 4 p.m., except for Friday when they close at 3 p.m. The store is closed on Sunday and Monday.
