Ticonderoga rallies past Moriah in extras for Class C title

MINEVILLE | Ticonderoga rallied from an early six-run deficit and erupted for five runs in the ninth inning to defeat Moriah 12-7 May 29 at Johnny Podres Field, clinching the Section VII Class C baseball championship. The Sentinels swept the best-of-three series 2-0 after also rallying late for a 3-2 walk-off victory in Game 1 on May 28. Ticonderoga trailed 7-1 after two innings in Game 2 before battling back to tie the game at 7-all in the fourth. Blaek Peters started the comeback with an RBI single to center field that scored Parker Davis and cut the deficit to 7-6. Owen TeRiele followed with a line-drive single to right field that plated Jackson Dorsett and tied the game. After both teams went scoreless through the middle innings, the Sentinels broke through in the ninth. Davis lined a single to right field to score two runs and give Ticonderoga its first lead since the first inning. Dorsett later reached on an error that allowed Trevor Blanchard to score and make it 10-7. Rowen Bechtold followed with a fly ball to left field that was misplayed, bringing home Davis and Dorsett for the final margin. TeRiele shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two batters to finish off the championship. Moriah appeared in control early after erupting for six runs in the second inning. Michael Bushey reached on an error that scored Kohin Sargent to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead before Billy Orr singled home Jackson Frasier for a 3-1 advantage. Owen Bobbie added an RBI single, and Bo McGinness capped the inning with a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 7-1. Blanchard finished a home run shy of the cycle for Ticonderoga. Davis and TeRiele each had two hits, while Bechtold added a double. Brady Mydlarz earned the pitching victory with one scoreless inning of relief. Bobbie led Moriah with two hits and two RBIs. McGinness and Joey Kazlo each doubled. In Game 1 May 28, Bechtold delivered the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning as Ticonderoga earned a 3-2 victory. Blanchard led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Davis. After Dorsett was intentionally walked for the third time in the game to load the bases, Bechtold lifted a fly ball to center field that scored Blanchard with the winning run. "I was proud of how our guys handled being down in a big game, and they just kept playing," Ticonderoga coach Dan Dorsett said. "We try to simulate pressure throughout the year, and they handled it great." Moriah took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kazlo singled and stole second before both he and Austin Mandy scored on Bobbie's two-run single. Orr kept Ticonderoga scoreless through four innings, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and stranding runners in scoring position in two other innings. Ticonderoga tied the game in the fifth. Davis scored after advancing on a throwing error, and Dorsett later scored on Bechtold's RBI single. Dorsett earned the complete-game victory for Ticonderoga, allowing three hits while striking out 12 and walking three. He struck out three of the final four batters before the walk-off inning. Orr also threw a complete game for Moriah, striking out three and allowing two earned runs. Davis finished with two hits for Ticonderoga, while Bechtold drove in two runs. Bobbie drove in both Moriah runs.
