North Creek Farmers Market opens June 18

NORTH CREEK | As summer approaches, the volunteers running the North Creek Farmers Market are looking forward to another successful season full of delicious, locally sourced foods, Adirondack-inspired handicrafts, terrific music—and lots of community spirit. The market, which opens for the season on Thursday, June 18, will be held weekly at Riverfront Park in North Creek from 2 to 5:30 p.m. through Sept. 17. According to Beth Maher, of North River, the Farmers Market is much more than a scenic spot to pick up fresh fruits and veggies, shop for a freshly baked pie, or check out the unique offerings of local artisans. "We also aim to build community, support the local economy, and help address food insecurity," said Maher, who is one of the market's co-organizers. Food vouchers, provided in partnership with the Adirondack Community Outreach Center (ACOC), are made available through the market's seasonal sponsors and a grant from the Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region. "Last year, we were able to provide $7,035 worth of food vouchers to our neighbors in need," Maher noted. "This year, we will continue to accept these vouchers, which are distributed through the Outreach Center's food pantry." "In addition to fresh food, the market offers visitors bushels of fun," added Market Co-organizer Peter Horvath, who is a resident of North River. "You can bring your well-behaved dog in hopes of winning the coveted "Puppy of the Week" title, sing along with the talented musicians, pick up a book or two (courtesy of the Town of Johnsburg Library), and admire the artwork being created at Tannery Pond's children's craft table," he said. "You can even treat yourself to a relaxing chair massage, with the proceeds being earmarked for the ACOC's School Backpack Program, or enter the North Creek Depot Museum's raffle to win a lightweight Hornbeck canoe!" Working partnerships and collaborations were key to the market's success, said Maher, who noted that the market is supported by the Town of Johnsburg, the Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region (CFGMR) and the Adirondack Community Outreach Center as well as by a number of generous season sponsors, including Revolution Rail Co., Barton Mine, Garnet Hill Lodge, Garnet Hill Property Owners Association, TC Murphy Lumber Company, and Choptank Mills Associates. "We are so grateful for all the support we received, and we can't wait to return to North Creek's Riverside Park this month," said Maher.
