Homeward Bound ADKS hosts open house & dedication of Malone retreat

SARANAC LAKE | Homeward Bound Adirondacks (HBA), a veterans service organization based in Saranac Lake, will host an open house and dedication of its 105-acre retreat center in the Town of Malone on July 18. The event will be held 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with dedications of the overall facility and its components beginning at 1 p.m. The public is invited to see the progress made by Homeward Bound in developing the Sgt. Carlton A. Clark Veterans Center, named in honor of a 22-year-old Vermont soldier who was killed in Iraq in 2006. A core part of Homeward Bound's programming involves weekend retreats for small groups of veterans in the calming, natural environment of the Adirondack North Country. The retreat center will serve as the base camp for a wide range of outdoor activities in the woods and waters of the Adirondacks. Homeward Bound also provides crisis outreach and suicide prevention services, as well as referrals for veterans needing housing, medical care and other community support. On-call transportation to medical appointments is provided along with emergency grants to veterans and their families in times of crisis. In announcing the open house and dedication, HBA Chairman Mark Moeller said, "We are planning a fun and informative day to show the public our progress since breaking ground for the retreat center four years ago." While development is ongoing, it is HBA's intention to use the site for retreats beginning in summer 2026. Mark Moeller also expressed his gratitude to a generous couple from Saranac Lake - who wish to remain anonymous - for providing a $10,000 matching grant to support Homeward Bound Adirondacks' "45K to Mission Home-Base" fundraising campaign. Funds donated to support Homeward Bound from May 2 forward will be matched up to $10,000. "The offer was made to help stimulate the additional donations needed to make the retreat center fully operational," said Moeller. He noted that "Homeward Bound has been able to help so many of our region's veterans due to the generosity of community members who recognize the importance of HBA's programs."
