Lake George girls defeat Salem, Corinth

LAKE GEORGE | The "fight to the end" credo that the Lake George Softball team embraces led to two wins and nearly a come-from-behind victory in a third game they played last week. On May 4, the Lakers defeated Salem 7-6, then lost to Granville 7-6 after a late-game surge that fell a little short, and two days later defeated Corinth 12-6. Against Salem, the Lakers were trailing 5-6 in the top of the sixth inning but got the outs they needed, then scored two runs in their next at-bat — and clamped down on Salem's defense in the 7th inning to win the game. Lakers coach Kim Zilm said she was proud of her team's tenacity and resilience. "Every day we talk about having confidence…and grinding it out for the whole game, and the girls are buying into that," she said. Zilm added that changing pitchers for the final two innings was another factor in their win, as the switch often presents a challenge to opponents. Addison Merrigan started on the mound for Lake George and threw 89 pitches, 49 of them in the strike zone. Olivia Tyrer took over for the final two innings, hurling 30 pitches, 16 of them strikes. Meanwhile, in the bottom of the sixth inning, McKenna Bennett slugged a ground ball to left field for a single, and she advanced to second on a passed ball, then Mollie Johnson singled to center field, scoring Bennett. Soon after, Merrigan drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Aubrey Richards singled on a line drive, scoring Merrigan for the winning run. Then Lake George's tough defense got three outs to end the game. Johnson led her team with three hits in three trips to the plate, accompanied by her RBI and a run. Bennett was 2 for 4 with one RBI and two runs, and Richards was 2 for 3 accompanied by an RBI. Liz Spath and Lena Caldaroni also contributed hits. GRANVILLE 7, LAKERS 5 Lake George was trailing 7-0 until the sixth inning when they scored five runs, but Granville responded by holding Lake George scoreless in the 7th to earn the win. Johnson had two hits and an RBI; Spath provided two RBIs, a hit and a run; and Caldaroni had a hit, one RBI and a run. Richards, Bennett and Olivia Duers contributed one hit each. Merrigan started on the mound, and after three and two-thirds innings, she was relieved by Olivia Tyrer who held Granville scoreless for two-plus innings. LAKE GEORGE 12, CORINTH 6 After Corinth scored three runs in the third inning, Lake George responded with 12 runs in the following three innings while holding the Riverhawks scoreless, except for their two runs in the 7th, to win 12-6. Merrigan, Caldaroni, Johnson, Duers and Tyrer each hit one double. Tyrer led the Lakers with two hits, three RBIs and two runs, while Duers had three hits and two RBIs, and Caldaroni had two hits and two RBIs. Richards contributed two hits, one RBI, and a run. Merrigan and Johnson each tallied one hit, one RBI, and two runs.
