Ticonderoga hires new Recreation Supervisor

TICONDEROGA | The Town of Ticonderoga's Youth Program has gotten off to a strong start this spring and heading into summer. Ti High Class of 2017 alum Samuel DuShane was recently hired as the new Recreation Supervisor, a role he took on this past March and has quickly been making his own. "I am excited about enhancing the After School Program and cultivating it to where kids look forward to coming every day and enjoying it after school," DuSHane said. "I want to introduce a more structured environment. The busier the kids are, the better they behave." After graduating high school, DuShane attended Siena College in Loudonville, where he earned a degree in Business Management with a minor in Educational Studies. He has experience in substitute teaching and also earned certification to teach in Vermont, where he served as a part-time physical education teacher in Stamford. DuShane has worked with kids from kindergarten all the way through high school in his substitute experience, but working with the younger population holds a special place in his heart. "Little kids get very interested in the small things and are very appreciative," he noted. The K-5 kids of the After School Program, held Monday through Friday at the Armory at 123 Champlain Avenue, will be enthusiastic to partake in a few brand new purchases the Youth Program has recently made thanks to a Stewart's Holiday Match Grant award in the amount of $350. "We used part of the grant to purchase new equipment to enhance the experience for the children, including a GAGA ball pit, which has been a major request from the kids," DuShane revealed. "These toys will be able to augment the after-school program and keep the kids busy, keep them engaged and interacting with one another. They are a really great addition to the program." DuShane is also gearing up for the Town of Ticonderoga's Summer Program, which will run for five weeks this summer From July 6 through Aug. 7. With a robust daily schedule that includes trips to Black Point Beach on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as visits to the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum for programing and activities and enjoying the weekly kid's programming courtesy of the Ticonderoga Festival Guild, kids are able to immerse themselves in healthy, as well as mentally and creatively stimulating activities when school is not in session. Parents too also appreciate knowing their children are safe, cared for, and fed while they are at work. The program runs five days a week, with drop-off beginning at 7:30 a.m. and pickup at 2:30 p.m. The program is already fully staffed with high school students who serve as counselors, making it worthwhile summer employment spent with children and serving as role models to Ti's younger generation. "This is a very rewarding job for counselors," DuShane shared. "You can brighten a kid's day, you are able to be outside engaging in and overseeing different games and organized play. It is very interactive." Applications for the Summer Program are available at the Community Building located at 132 Montcalm Street. Enrollment for the After School Program is open throughout the school year, and applications are also available at the Community Building or may be printed off online and dropped off at the Town Clerk's office. Vaccination records are required to be provided with the application before children are able to attend the program.
