Lake George students create Ultimate Creatures

LAKE GEORGE | What makes the ultimate creature? That's the question 7th-grade students at Lake George Jr.-Sr. High School are tackling in a project that blends science, creativity, and a little friendly competition. Now in its tenth year, the Ultimate Creature project was designed to transform a traditional written research assignment into something far more engaging. Instead of simply studying environments and adaptations, students apply their understanding by designing their own original creatures, each uniquely equipped to survive and thrive in a specific habitat. In life science classes led by teachers Eric Rosenbrock and Kevin Burrall, students explore how organisms adapt to their environments, from securing food and defending themselves to withstanding climate challenges. They then bring those concepts to life by creating a four-page "Who Would Win?"-style book that showcases their creature's abilities through both scientific reasoning and storytelling. The project builds toward the "Ultimate Creature Throwdown," a structured, multi-round classroom debate where students put their creations to the test. They begin with a quick reintroduction of their creature before focusing on its most significant adaptation. From there, students are challenged to highlight the strengths of a peer's design and engage in thoughtful, respectful critique of others. The process culminates in a final vote, as the class comes together to determine which creation truly earns the title of "Ultimate Creature." Throughout the experience, students are also evaluated by their peers on how effectively their creature can find food, defend itself, adapt creatively, and survive environmental conditions. "The best part of the project, for me, is watching the students take ownership of their work," said Rosenbrock. "It has become an assignment that they "want" to complete and not "have to" complete. The debate portion of the project allows students to proclaim why their animal is the "Ultimate Creature" and defend themselves when questioned by their peers. They also learn how to challenge others' viewpoints respectfully to gain more information about their work." By combining scientific concepts with creativity, collaboration, and debate, the Ultimate Creature project continues to be a standout experience, one that not only deepens understanding of life science, but also empowers students to think, create, and communicate like real scientists.
