First climbers thrilled with new Peter S. Blumette Park playground

PLATTSBURGH | The new playground at Peter S. Blumette Park in Ward 3 is installed and open. Neighborhood tots have already sorted their favorite features. Twin boys who visit their grandmother nearby have kept their eyes on crews working to finish installing equipment, she said, and were among the very first to try it out. "We come over every day they're here," their grandmother said as the twin boys scrambled to the web climber. "They love it." A mom and daughter have found the new playground, too, and they favor a swing with seats for a child and a parent together. The new sets include an upright swing with straps for young children or children with limited mobility. Kids at Blumette on Tuesday kept busy, laughing at the wind, exploring ways to climb and slide over and under, swing and spin. The new playground opened just in time for the start of warm weather. The old equipment was removed last November as the frigid winter blew in. In addition to bright-colored swings, climbers, activity panels, ladders and slides, new benches and wheelchair accessible picnic tables are in place. Ramps to playground areas will assist people in wheelchairs or walkers. Renovations were made to the washrooms on premises along with installation of exterior security cameras. Last fall, the Common Council approved $196,000 for restoration and renewal at Peter S. Blumette Park, part of the City of Plattsburgh's Parks Renewal Phase One planning that began several years ago. City residents were able to take part in playground feature selection and upgrades. Caution tape still surrounds sections of the lawn needing topsoil. A few landscaping touches have yet to be completed, pending weather for planting. Ward 3 councilor Jackie Strack said, "It's wonderful to see the new playground at Peter Blumette Park. I am especially glad to see that it uses wood chips instead of tire chips, which are made of toxic materials and not a healthy or eco-friendly option. "My own children have been to the new park many times and love it. It is very uplifting to see so many kids and families there on a regular basis. I think local parks and recreation opportunities are hugely important for the community. People are looking for fun, free or low-cost activities that get them outside and interacting with community members and I am very happy to see new parks on our city that provide this opportunity." But an official ribbon cutting at Peter S. Blumette Park will be held on June 11 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as part of the summer 2026 Park Come Alive! series. The park is located in a residential neighborhood at 101 Park Ave. in the City of Plattsburgh. There are volunteer opportunities open for anyone who might like to get more involved in city events, festivals and celebrations, such as Parks Come Alive! The city is looking for people who might want to help set up at Memorial Day parade festivities on May 25.
