Peru, PHS trade wins in CVAC baseball showdown

PLATTSBURGH | Peru and Plattsburgh High split a two-day Champlain Valley Athletic Conference baseball series, with each team winning on its home field. Peru opened with a 5-3 victory on April 21 at Papero Field, using a three-run fifth inning to overcome a 3-1 deficit. Plattsburgh High responded with a 3-1 win on April 22 at Bob Garrow Field behind a strong pitching performance from Diego Rios. In the opener, Peru took the lead for good by scoring three times in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth. Kalib Smith drove in two runs, while Gabe Moore added an RBI. Deacon Whitmarsh scored twice. Jake Frechette earned the win for Peru, striking out 10 of the 25 batters he faced without issuing a walk while allowing three runs, none earned, on three hits. Plattsburgh High's Raif Lautenscheutz had two hits, Ryan Colburn doubled and drove in a run, and Ryan Brown drove in two runs. Lucas Kowalowski allowed four runs on four hits over five innings with four strikeouts. Cooper Holland gave up one run in one inning of relief. In the second game, Plattsburgh High broke a 1-1 tie with two decisive runs in the third inning. Peru's lone run occurred in the second. Rios struck out eight over six innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits and six walks. Holland struck out two in a scoreless seventh. Plattsburgh High head coach Joe Tolosky praised his team's response after the opening loss. "I'm proud of how our team responded after yesterday's game," Tolosky said. "We knew it was going to be another battle, and credit to Peru, they're a skilled baseball team." He also highlighted his pitching staff. "Diego had an outstanding performance for us on the mound against another quality opponent. It started with him, and Cooper came in a tough spot to get the job done." Kal Abernethy provided the key hit for Plattsburgh High. "Kal came up big for us, driving in two runs with two outs, giving us the momentum back after they tied the game," Tolosky said. Kalib Smith struck out six over six innings for Peru, allowing three runs on six hits. Trent Taylor scored Peru's only run, while Taylor, Deacon Whitmarsh and Jake Frechette each had a hit. After the series, both teams stood at 4-1 overall. Peru was 4-1 in CVAC play, while Plattsburgh High was 2-1 in conference action.
