Perkins tosses 19 Ks, NCCS wins wooden-bat title

CHAMPLAIN | Jacob Perkins brought his A-game to the mound in the championship of Northeastern Clinton's wooden-bat tournament. The senior entered with no outs in the first inning and the bases loaded, then turned in a dominant relief performance, striking out 19 and allowing one hit in Northeastern Clinton's 3-1 win over Chazy on April 18. Perkins gave up only a single to freshman Jack Demers and did not issue a walk over seven scoreless innings. He also had two of Northeastern Clinton's four hits, including a triple. Northeastern Clinton (4-0) tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the second inning and took the lead for good in the fifth. The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth. "This was another great game in the wooden-bat tournament," Northeastern Clinton head coach Jeff Norton said. "We had better at-bats this game and threatened to score more frequently. We have to find a way to come up with the big hit in those situations, but I am happy with our pitching and defense today." Chazy's pitching was equally impressive. Demers, Griffin Durocher and sophomore Jack Bell combined for three scoreless innings and allowed four hits. The Eagles did not commit an error. "Chazy pitching and defense was strong, keeping the championship game close right to the end," Norton said. Moriah outlasted AuSable Valley 6-5 in the consolation game. The tournament was the second edition of the event and the first since 2024. MORIAH 6 AUSABLE VALLEY 5 CHAMPLAIN | Moriah capitalized on four AuSable Valley errors, including the decisive miscue in the seventh inning, to score a 6-5 walk-off victory in the consolation game. With the game tied, Moriah's Austin Mandy singled with one out and stole second. Jackson Frasier followed with a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away beyond first base, allowing Mandy to score the winning run from second. Billy Orr earned the win in relief, striking out two in one inning of work. Mandy started and struck out three with one walk, while Owen Bobbie added four strikeouts over four scoreless innings. Lucas Dashnaw took the loss, allowing one hit and striking out one in one-third of an inning. Brent Clairmont struck out seven and walked two over six innings for AuSable Valley. Frasier led Moriah at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles. Orr was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Mandy also finished 2-for-4. Joey Kazlo added a home run, while Bo McGinness had a double. Dashnaw paced AuSable Valley, going 4-for-4 with an RBI.
