Burghers extend their winning ways

WARRENSBURG | Continuing their early-season winning streak, the Warrensburg softball team defeated Granville 5-4 April 10 in a 7th-inning comeback victory. Warrensburg was trailing 4-1 after Granville scored three runs in the fifth inning, but the Burghers scored one run in the sixth inning, and in the bottom of the 7th, scored three more to win the game. With the win, the Burghers are now 3-0 for the 2026 season. Burghers Coach Teresa Colvin said she was pleased with her players' confidence and perseverance. "Knowing they could get on base and score, our players kept battling and took advantage of opportunities," Colvin said. Warrensburg's scoring surge started when senior Emma Brennan was hit by a pitch and got on base; then sophomore Kaylie Powers singled, sending Brennan to second base. This gameplay advanced the Burghers to the top of their batting order. Then freshman Ava Costigliola earned a walk, and eighth grader Savannah Duell followed by hitting a fielder's choice that scored Brennan and advanced other players. Costigliola scored the winning run on a passed ball. "The girls' performance shows their talent and resilience, Colvin added, noting her players were "smart" in their base-running. "They weren't hanging their heads going into the 7th." Warrensburg 8th-grader Kiera Hopkins pitched the entire game, striking out 10 batters while giving up four hits, Colvin said. "Several talented Granville players got extra bases, but Kiera never got rattled; she kept on throwing hard." On offense, Hopkins was 2 for 3, hit a double, and batted in a runner. This week, the Burghers have a substantial challenge, as they are playing five games, beginning with a matchup with Whitehall Monday, April 13 at home. Next up is a rematch with Hadley-Luzerne Wednesday, April 15 on the Eagles' field, followed by another away game Friday, April 17 against Salem. All three of these games begin at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, April 18, the Burghers will be competing in the Maple Hill softball tournament in Castleton-on-Hudson. The first of the Burghers' two games in the tournament starts at 9:30 a.m.
