Baseball: NW splits first two games

CHESTERTOWN | The North Warren baseball team lost its first 2026 game March 30 to Glens Falls — a school with more than four times its enollment — but rebounded two days later to defeat Northville 15-3. Both were non-league games. In the 10-2 loss to Glens Falls, the Cougars held a temporary advantage as senior C.J. Barlow singled, scoring a run in the top of the first inning, but when the Black Bears got to bat, Glens Falls' Chace Davidson hit a home run to take the lead 2-1. By the end of the third inning, Glens Falls had advanced the score to 8-1. Aidan Perry earned the win for Glens Falls. North Warren junior Maceo Matson took the loss for his team — he pitched for one and two-thirds innings, striking out two batters, but he allowed three runs on three hits. Senior Owen Schaefer relieved Matson and pitched three and one-third innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Barlow went 1 for 2 at the plate and executed an RBI, while Matson was 2 for 3 at the plate and senior Dan Mattison slugged a double. North Warren players collectively stole four bases. COUGARS 15, NORTHVILLE 3 Strong batting and tough defense by North Warren led to their 15-3 April 1 victory over Northville. Their offense was productive early, as in the first inning, Matson homered to center field, Mattison grounded into a fielder's choice, and the Cougars scored on a passed ball to earn a score of 3-0. In the second inning, Northville tied the score, but a home run to center field in the third inning by North Warren senior Will Lindsley gave his team a 6-3 lead. The Cougars unleashed their formidable offense beginning in the fourth inning. This nine-run scoring surge started when Mattison doubled, scoring a run, and sophomore Nico Tucci hit a sacrifice fly ball, scoring another. A subsequent error by Northville scored two runs, then sophomore Brodie Rooker homered, scoring three more. Soon after, Tucci and Masiello earned walks, each of which scored one run. Mattison, the Cougars' starting pitcher, struck out three batters and walked two. He allowed three hits and three runs over two innings. Relieving Mattison was junior George Hilton, who was credited with the win. He struck out four batters and walked two, allowing one hit and no runs over three innings. Matson and Mattison each tallied two hits while Lindsley and Rooker each drove in three runs. North Warren batters employed sharp judgment at the plate, earning 14 total walks; Schaefer led his team with three. Their base-running was also impressive, as they stole seven bases collectively, with Hilton and Barlow leading the charge. The Cougars also didn't commit any fielding errors.
