WCS 8th-grade pitchers reign in 2026's first softball games

WARRENSBURG | Demonstrating their prowess on the outset of the season, the Warrensburg softball team won their first two games of 2026. The Burghers defeated Hartford March 30 by a score of 21-3 and then on April 1 beat Hadley-Luzerne 14-0. Against Hartford, eighth-grade pitcher Kiera Hopkins, on the mound for all but two of the innings, struck out 10 batters and was credited with the win. Classmate Savannah Duell pitched the remaining innings, allowing only one hit. Duell also doubled, singled, and tallied two RBIs. Sophomore Ella LaPoint tallied 5 for 5 with five RBIs, a triple and a double. Freshman Ava Costigliola went 3 for 6 with three RBIs and a double. Senior Caitlin O'Donnell had three hits, while her sister Celia O'Donnell, a sophomore, hit a double and a single. BURGHERS 14, EAGLES 0 Against Hadley-Luzerne, Hopkins earned the win by pitching four innings, striking out seven batters, and allowing no hits or runs. Duell again relieved Hopkins for two innings, allowing one hit, but preventing any runs. Hitting doubles against the Eagles were Costigliola, LaPoint and Celia O'Donnell. At the plate, LaPoint went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs, Costigliola was 3 for 5 with one RBI, and Celia O'Donnell tallied 2 for 5. "While some of our bats are getting hot, our defense has really stood out in these first two games — The girls have been really solid in the field with very few errors," coach Teresa Colvin said. She also said she was pleased with her team's timely hits that resulted in extra bases, and how well Hopkins and Duell were pitching. "Our two eighth-grade pitchers have been doing really well," she said, noting that quite a few teams in the Adirondack League have young pitchers. "For the next few years, the Adirondack League is going to be competitive and strong," she added. After a non-league game during spring break week versus Granville at 11 a.m. Friday, April 10, the Burghers' regular season continues the following week with three games and a tournament. Warrensburg will host Whitehall on Monday, April 13, compete in a rematch with Hadley-Luzerne Wednesday, April 15 on the Eagles' field, then participate in a home game Friday April 17 with Salem on the Generals' field. All three games begin at 4:30 p.m. This busy week concludes Saturday April 18 with the annual Maple Hill tournament that will involve two games. Competition is to begin at 9:30 a.m. Three years ago, the Burghers won this tournament by defeating Amsterdam and Maple Hill.
