LGA unveils 2026-2030 Strategic Plan to strengthen Lake George protection

LAKE GEORGE | For 141 years, the Lake George Association (LGA) has protected the Queen of American Lakes through science, solutions, community engagement, partnerships and advocacy. Thanks to this enduring commitment, Lake George remains of the cleanest recreational lakes in the country. Now, the LGA is launching its next chapter of protection through its 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. The Plan clarifies the organization's approach to safeguarding Lake George water quality through a Continuous Cycle of Lake Protection. This model reflects five core pillars that guide the LGA's work: science identifies threats, solutions reduce pollution at its source, partnerships expand impact, community engagement mobilizes informed support, and advocacy secures lasting protections through sound and science-informed policy. "Our Strategic Plan reflects the most focused and coordinated approach in our organization's history," said LGA President & CEO Dr. Brendan Wiltse. "We're increasing our annual budget from $3.5 million to $4.5 million dollars, with additional investments supporting LGA grants to partners, informing and engaging the community, and building out our advocacy efforts. By deepening these focuses, we will strengthen long-term protections and elevate Lake George's importance locally, regionally and statewide." The Strategic Plan builds directly on the LGA's legacy of science-based leadership. Shortly after its founding in 1885 as the nation's first lake conservation organization, the LGA conducted its first sanitation survey in 1889, identifying wastewater as a threat to water quality. Over decades of rigorous scientific research, additional pressures have been revealed, such as road salt, invasive species, stormwater and the impacts of climate change. Each time, science has guided practical solutions and informed policy action. The LGA's advocacy has helped shape state legislation, guide local resource decisions and support the establishment and strengthening of the Lake George Park and Lake George Park Commission. "Long-term change requires leadership and persistence from a passionate community," said LGA Board Chair Dr. John E. Kelly, III. "This new Strategic Plan reflects the LGA's history of listening to the lake through science, adapting with solutions as new challenges emerge and ensuring that watershed protections stand the test of time through our community's unified voice funneled through the LGA." The plan outlines strategic objectives to achieve its 2030 goals, including developing a comprehensive State of the Lake reporting framework, advancing Low Impact Development practices in local planning, continuing support of cutting-edge research through the Jefferson Project, expanding public access to science and policy tools, and strategically growing the organization's capacity to meet increasingly cumulative and emerging water quality challenges.
