WCS softball team realigns for 2026

WARRENSBURG | Although a half-dozen players have left the Warrensburg Softball team since last season either due to graduation or conflicting commitments, the remaining players have the athleticism and work ethic that will likely lead to a successful season. Returning for her second year as a varsity pitcher is 8th grader Kiera Hopkins, who proved her talent on the mound last year. Warrensburg softball coach Teresa Colvin said Hopkins has a "really good" fastball, a wily rising ball, and a sly change-up pitch. "Kiera definitely has a good variety of pitches she can throw consistently," Colvin said. "Kiera will perform on any stage — she works really hard, plays year-round, and she's a really good fielder." Hopkins competes in travel ball and has been taking pitching lessons. The team's other pitcher is Kiera's classmate Savannah Duell, who last year as a 7th grader was the winning pitcher in a 14-2 victory over Slate Valley of Fairhaven, Vt. "Savannah has a good fastball and places it well," Colvin said, adding that her change-up is also effective. Duell's primary role is shortstop. The team's catcher is multi-sport athlete Celia O'Donnell, a sophomore who gained experience behind the plate last season, the 13-year coach said. "Celia has been working with Kiera off-season, and she's been doing a great job for us," Colvin said. Expected to play first base is another multi-sport athlete, sophomore Kaylie Powers, whom Colvin said has solid skills. Taking on third base duties is sophomore Ella LaPoint. "Ella played first base before, so this is a big shift," Colvin said. "She has a good arm and a great bat." Junior Reagan Moos will be handling second base, where she was positioned last year, Colvin said, noting that Moos has the experience needed for the post. Freshman Ava Costigliola will be returning to center field; three-year varsity multi-sport athlete Caitlin O'Donnell will take on left field, and senior Emma Brennan will be in right field. Junior Mikaela Smith will be rotated in as an outfielder, and classmate Dakota Ackley, will also provide backup as he gains skills, Colvin said. Persistent snow and ice on Warrensburg's softball field have prompted the team to hold nearly all its practices this season in the school's gym. The Burghers' first game is scheduled for Monday, March 30 versus Hartford on the Tanagers' field, followed by a matchup the following day versus Hadley-Luzerne. Both games start at 4:30 p.m. and are dependent on weather and field conditions. Adirondack League games start the week of April 13 after spring break. "Our players are working hard, having fun, and our team chemistry is great this year," Colvin said. "I'm looking forward to seeing what they can achieve this year."
