Chapple earns CVAC hockey MVP honors

PLATTSBURGH | Plattsburgh High's resurgence this winter was driven from the crease, and Owen Chapple's standout season earned him the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference's top individual boys hockey honor. Chapple was named the CVAC Most Valuable Player after helping lead the Hornets to a 5-3 conference record and a second-place league finish. Across eight CVAC games, Chapple went 5-3 while stopping 241 of 259 shots for a .931 save percentage and a 2.23 goals-against average. Plattsburgh head coach Trevor Cameron was selected as the Gary Ryan Coach of the Year. In his first season behind the Hornets' bench, Cameron guided Plattsburgh to a 13-6-2 overall record and a 5-3 mark in CVAC play. The Hornets had gone a combined 15-41-6 over the previous three seasons. Northeastern Clinton was recognized with the Ray Holmes Sportsmanship Award. Beekmantown's Edward Sweenor and Saranac Lake/Lake Placid's Ayden McCormick headlined the first team. Sweenor led the CVAC in assists and points, finishing with 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points in eight conference games. McCormick led the league in goals with 12 and added nine assists for 21 points. Also earning first-team honors were Saranac's Ryan Campbell, who recorded seven goals and three assists; Plattsburgh defenseman Sam Bezio, who finished with four goals and three assists and tied teammate James Bayer for the conference lead among defensemen with seven points; Northeastern Clinton's Hayden Schad, who totaled two goals and two assists; and Beekmantown goaltender Jack Bell. Bell posted an 8-0 record in CVAC play, stopping 183 of 195 shots for a .938 save percentage and a 1.57 goals-against average.
