Gillibrand cosponsors legislation to reduce federal income taxes

WASHINGTON, D.C. | U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), along with Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Andy Kim (D-NJ), introduced new legislation to provide much-needed tax relief for millions of working Americans who are struggling with rising costs in President Trump's America. The Working Americans' Tax Cut Act would provide broad, permanent tax cuts to nearly 130 million working Americans. The bill would eliminate federal income taxes for Americans who make under the median cost of living, $46,000, and provide a significant tax break to individuals making between $46,000 and $80,500, with proportionally higher rates for heads of households and married couples. "Families are struggling amidst higher costs in Trump's America," said Sen. Gillibrand. "I'm proud to cosponsor the Working Americans' Tax Cut Act to support working families, drive economic growth, and reduce income inequality. While the Trump administration turns its back on hardworking Americans, I will keep fighting to lower costs and make sure Americans can take home more of their hard-earned pay." In addition to Senators Gillibrand, Van Hollen, Kelly, Booker, and Kim, this legislation is cosponsored in the Senate by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Chris Coons (D-DE), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Angus King (I-ME), Ed Markey (D-MA), Peter Welch (D-VT), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE). Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation is fully paid for and avoids raising the national debt through a tiered surtax on income above a million dollars. This proposal stands in stark contrast to the tax law that President Trump and Republicans in Congress passed last year, which provided a tax giveaway to billionaires and exploded the deficit, while offering only temporary relief for some working families.
