Wbg.-L.G. wrestling has promising future

WARRENSBURG | After enduring a season hampered by a short lineup of athletes, the Warrensburg-Lake George boys wrestling team is positioned for a recovery in 2026-27 and subsequent years. Through the 2025-26 season, the Burghers had to forfeit five weight classes in most of their meets, which gave their opponents 30 points before any matches started. Such a burden hampered the team's win-loss record, although the Burghers managed to place high in several tournaments despite their personnel deficit. Head coach Mark Trapasso said March 14 that he expects the varsity team to have far more wrestlers in its lineup next season, as the modified Burghers team and the local youth program all have robust participation. "There's a lot of talent coming up," he said. "Our youth numbers are fantastic." Although the team is losing five accomplished seniors — Ben Miner, Glenn Potter, Colton Stannard, Kawliga Duell, and Cody LeBarron — a group of talented younger wrestlers is expected to return: • Landon Duers, a junior wrestling at 132 pounds, has regularly competed off-season. A three-year wrestler, he has a 31-8 win-loss record this season, and a 63-24 record overall. Duers won the Class D tournament title, was runner-up in the Queensbury Holiday Wrestling Tournament, and placed 6th in the Section II tournament. Also, he won all six of his matches in the Duanesburg Duals meet held Dec. 13. Trapasso said Duers' success will likely prompt his friends to join the team. • Cody Bacon, a sophomore, has won 13 matches this season at 118 pounds and prevailed in 29 matches over his three-year career. He placed fourth in the 2026 Class D tournament. "Cody's been around a long time, and his best years are ahead of him," Trapasso said. • Cameron Remington, a sophomore, who wrestled last year at 170 pounds, is expected to rejoin the team after his absence this year due to a pre-season injury, Trapasso said. "He's a very athletic kid, and we look forward to his return," Trapaaso said. "He'll be better than ever when he comes back." • Jason Briggs, a sophomore, joined the varsity team in mid-December 2024, and this season he won 17 matches at 190 pounds. He took 4th, 5th, and 6th place in three prominent area tournaments this season. • Ledger Boutin, a sophomore who joined the varsity team in the 2024-25 season, is also a promising wrestler, as he won 15 matches this year at 126 pounds. He won first place in the Galway Invitational Wrestling Tournament and placed fourth in the 2025 Class D tournament. • Keaton Vernum, a freshman, wrestled throughout this season, primarily at 132 pounds. He won eight matches and placed 6th in two tournaments. • Isaiah Parrish, a freshman who joined the team this season, wrestled at 138, 144 and 150 pounds. He won six matches and placed 8th in the Galway tournament. • Castiel Jacobson-Hunt, a freshman, won two matches before an injury sidelined him, but he's likely to return in 2026-27. Trapasso expressed enthusiasm over the young wrestlers who will be drafted for next season. "There's a really good group of Modified kids that will be moving up into our lineup— They will definitely be winning some matches, he said. "I know of several eighth graders who are large, strong, and rugged, and I'm working to recruit them and others who will be playing fall sports and want to compete during the winter months."
