Vilas Home opens two new secure memory care units

PLATTSBURGH | The Samuel F. Vilas Home, the historic assisted living community located on the corner of Beekman and Cornelia Streets, has announced that its multi-year expansion project is complete, bringing two secure memory care units, more assisted living rooms as well as enhanced assisted living services to the area. The multi-phased expansion plan, which included the construction of a 70-bed addition as well as a historically sensitive renovation of the original 1888 Vilas Home building, brings with it new amenities including a physical therapy pool and fitness center, an activities room with a demonstration kitchen, a library and business center, as well as several four-season porches and an outdoor walking loop for residents to enjoy. "The new spaces at the Vilas Home turned out beautifully – we put a lot of thought and intention into the design because it was important to us that we create a place where people choose to live and where our residents not only receive the care and assistance they need as they age, but also have a high quality of life," stated owner Eli Schwartzberg. The Vilas Home is a licensed Assisted Living Facility and boasts an Enhanced Assisted Living License – meaning residents are able to receive skilled nursing services as their needs change and they can age in place for a longer period of time than traditional assisted living allows. Assisted living services at the Vilas Home also include 24/7 personal care assistance and supervision, medication management, daily meals and snacks, housekeeping and laundry services, daily activities, case management services as well as local transportation for residents. "We are pleased to be able to offer secure memory care services as well as some exciting new amenities such as the outdoor walking loop, the screened porches and activities spaces including the library and demonstration kitchen. These all contribute to a more enriching experience for our assisted living and memory care residents," stated Schwartzberg. The Vilas Home opened the second and final phase of the expansion project early this year and began welcoming residents into the secure memory care in mid-January. The memory care units, which are specially designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals with progressing dementia and other cognitive impairments, feature a home-like design with bright, open spaces and specialized staffing to ensure residents are safe and engaged in their environment. "Our residents and families have been very positive, and we're humbled by the response. We are also grateful for the patience of our residents and dedicated staff as well as our neighbors and the greater community as we've navigated this multi-year construction project. It was a long road, and we're happy it is finally complete and fully open," stated Schwartzberg. "Most importantly, we are incredibly proud and appreciative that our original leadership and staff are still with us from when we bought the Home in 2019. They are the ones who have truly preserved Vilas' legacy and built the reputation for high-quality, resident-centered care that has existed at the Vilas Home for over a century and now fills these beautiful spaces," added Schwartzberg. Project financing is being provided by Champlain National Bank in partnership with Glens Falls National Bank and Community Bank in addition to private investment. The Vilas Home is the recipient of a PILOT through the Clinton County IDA and has partnered with the Plattsburgh Housing Authority and the City of Plattsburgh to receive a Community Development Block Grant. The Vilas Home is owned and operated by Eli and Emily Schwartzberg who purchased the Home from its not-for-profit board in 2019. The Schwartzbergs also own and operate the Champlain Valley Senior Community, an enhanced assisted living and memory care community located in Willsboro. The North Country natives reside in Lake Placid with their two young children. There will be an open house at the Vilas Home on Thursday, March 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. to celebrate the construction completion and the opening of the two memory care units.
