ADK Family Book Festival returns in August

LAKE PLACID | The Adirondack Family Book Festival is returning for its fifth year of connecting children and families with their favorite authors. On Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., award-winning authors and illustrators will be on the historic Oval at the Lake Placid Middle/High School to present on panels, meet readers, and sign books. This year's authors include two-time Newbery Medalist Erin Entrada Kelly, National Book Award winner and Newbery Honoree Daniel Nayeri, Newbery Medalist Rebecca Stead, Caldecott Medalist Jason Chin, Newbery Honoree Veera Hiranandani, National Book Award Finalist Kekla Magoon, and Coretta Scott King Award Honor winner Varian Johnson, New York Times bestselling author Sara Beth Durst, and award-winning authors Hena Khan and Torrey Maldonado. Beloved local authors Loree Griffin Burns, Honni David, Rebecca Donnelly, Maxwell Eaton III, Amy Guglielmo, and Kate Messner round out the festival's 2026 roster. Messner, the New York Times best-selling author of The Trouble with Heroes helps bring the festival to life each summer and says, "I've been to book festivals all over the world, but the Adirondack Family Book Festival is the one that I most look forward to each year. It's absolutely magical to bring award-winning authors from all over the country to celebrate stories with us here at home, in our mountains." Amy Guglielmo, an organizer of the festival and co-author of the award-winning Pocket Full of Colors: The Magical World of Mary Blair, says, "As a kid growing up in the Adirondacks, I had never met an author or an illustrator. The Adirondack Family Book Festival is special because it allows local kids to connect with award-winning book creators and hear their stories. The hands-on art and writing workshops engage and inspire young readers in our beautiful backyard." "Year after year, festival authors and artists show children a vision of the world as a kind and good place," said Martha Swan, Executive Director of John Brown Lives! "We are proud to host the festival with our wonderful volunteer committee and grateful to the loyal sponsors and funders who make this special day possible and help young readers imagine a better and more beautiful world." Generous community support from The Bookstore Plus, Lake Placid Education Fund, Price Chopper, Rotary Club of Lake Placid, Rotary Club of Saranac Lake, Long Run Wealth Advisors, LLC, and Lake Placid Public Library keeps the festival free and open to all. Other critical support has been provided in past years by North Elba LEAF, the Town of North Elba, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and by former Assemblyman Billy Jones, who secured a New York State Legislative grant from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services for multiple years. The Bookstore Plus will be on hand throughout the day of the festival to sell books, and the authors will be available throughout the day to meet their readers and sign copies of their books. In case of poor weather, the festival will be moved indoors at the Lake Placid Middle/High School.
