Lakers' playoff run ends in Class C quarterfinal

STILLWATER | The Lake George Girls Basketball team's Section II tournament campaign concluded Feb. 27 as they lost to Berne-Knox-Westerlo 74-34 in a quarterfinal game held at Stillwater High School. Lakers coach Jeff Bennett said his team, seeded No. 6, fought hard against No. 3-seeded BKW throughout all four quarters. "Berne-Knox has five really good, physical basketball players, and they were in our face despite our players also being in their face," he said. "We battled, competed well, kept pace with them and didn't quit, but we just didn't have enough scoring to keep up with them." Over the game, Mykah Collier-Fisher scored 14 points, Madyson Brennan followed with nine points, Morgan Stanco contributed five points, Chloe Popa added four points, and McKenna Brennan chipped in two points. LAKERS 47, HAWKS 34 Three days earlier, the Lake George girls defeated Hoosic Valley 47-34 in the Class C opening round of 16 teams. The game was held in the Lakers' gym. Bennett said the two teams' scores remained within merely a few points throughout the game.. "We knew they would be tough and physical, and they knocked down threes," he said. "But we stayed positive and did what we do well." He said he was pleased with his team's performance. "All of our four scorers stepped up: Morgan hit a lot of points in the fourth quarter to put us up and brought down 14 rebounds, Maddie (Madyson Brennan) had some really nice drives, Mykah went coast to coast, while Chloe hit foul shots right at the end for us," he said. Collier-Fisher led the scoring with 12 points accompanied by eight rebounds; Brennan provided 12 points and eight rebounds; Stanco scored 14 points, including seven in the fourth quarter while bringing down 13 rebounds; and Popa contributed nine points and four rebounds. Coach Bennett said his team utilized a strategy that they had practiced in sessions prior to the game, and it proved successful. "We used the clock by slowing things down, taking our time, not giving our opponent extra possessions," he said. The Lakers' 2025-026 season ended with a win-loss record of 17-5 overall, 10-2 in the Adirondack League. GRADUATING LAKERS HAILED Coach Bennett said his team's three players who are graduating in June will be missed: seniors and team co-captains Morgan Stanco and Mykah Collier-Fisher, as well as junior Lauren Coers, who is graduating a year earlier than her peers. Bennett said Stanco was one of the team's leading scorers and rebounders. "Morgan has been so consistent and strong in the paint," Bennett said. "She's always positive and has worked so hard throughout the year." Bennett said Collier-Fisher was an "absolute leader" of the team. "Mykah has always been the best athlete on the floor — she's extremely fast, explosive, and been very positive," he said. Bennett said Coers was also a key player. "Lauren is very athletic, smooth in everything she does, and a really nice person — she's positive and radiates good energy."
