Lake Placid H.S. to host Concussion Outreach Prevention Education Seminar

LAKE PLACID | The Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS) and the New York State Athletic Trainers' Association (NYSATA) will host a Concussion Outreach Prevention Education (COPE) seminar on Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. COPE provides valuable information for educators, nurses, coaches, athletic trainers, students, and parents/guardians on how to create a plan for a successful return of a concussed student back to youth and higher education sports and the classroom as well as many ways to prevent concussions. It will take place at the Lake Placid Middle and High School Auditorium, 50 Cummings Rd. Presenters include Eugene Byrne, MD, Adirondack Health; Dino Angelopoulos, ATC, Adirondack Health; and Michelle Kellen, M.Ed. from BIANYS. Ryan Bruce, a junior at Lake Placid Middle and High School, knows the dangers of a concussion well. While playing hockey, an opposing player cross-checked Ryan, resulting in his head hitting the boards. At first, he didn't really remember what had happened and tried to play it off. His coach, however, noticed him behaving differently and had the team's athletic trainer evaluate him. The result, a concussion diagnosis. Ryan struggled with feeling dizzy, hazy, and not acting like himself. He was emotional and had constant headaches. While he is now fully recovered, Ryan urges others to become educated about concussions. "I was always aware of concussions, but never realized how serious they were," said Ryan. "I wasn't taking the proper steps to protect myself, such as wearing a mouthguard, and I paid the price. I wish I knew more before and think it is important that everyone learns the best way to protect themselves." COPE is a program designed by NYSATA and BIANYS, two well-known and established statewide organizations with expertise in concussion. NYSATA plays a strong role in recognizing concussion, managing recovery and eventual return to play. BIANYS helps victims of concussions and has a history of concussion education, including its Supporting Students Recovering from Concussion: Return to Learn program. To date, BIANYS has brought their Return to Learn training to over 150 schools and/or districts, educating over 2,100 school personnel.
