Lake George girls head into Sectionals

LAKE GEORGE | Armed with athletes who have height, shooting accuracy, and a resolute will-to-win, the Lake George Girls Basketball team is expected to be a strong competitor in the Section II Class C tournament. Seeded No. 6 in Class C, the Lakers are scheduled to compete against No. 11-seeded Hoosic Valley in the opening round of the tournament at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the Lake George High School gym. As of Feb. 23, Lake George has a 16-4 record overall and a 10-2 record in the Adirondack League, while the Hawks are 8-11 overall and 5-8 in the Wasaren League. Both leagues have been highly competitive this year. Lake George was undefeated in their league until Jan. 30 when they lost to Class B Corinth, and were subsequently defeated by Whitehall 44-18 on Feb. 11 — although the Lakers had beaten the Railroaders 36-26 one month earlier. The Lakers often dominate in ball possession and rebounding due to their lineup of tall players. On Feb. 23, Lake George coach Jeff Bennett described his players' attributes. "We definitely have size — we have tall girls and others who play tall," he said. Sophomore power forward Madyson Brennan and her sister, seventh-grade center McKenna Brennan, are six feet tall and five-feet-eleven, respectively, while junior center Neveah Howe is six-feet-zero. The Lakers, who play as if they have such height, are senior shooting guard Mykah Collier-Fisher and senior forward Morgan Stanco, both five-feet-seven. Meanwhile, junior Chloe Popa, a hotshot from three-point range, has been leading the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game, sinking 29 percent of her treys. "Chloe has been shooting the lights out from downtown," Bennett said. Mykah and Madyson are quite close to Popa in their point production, as they have to date averaged 10.7 and 10.1 points per game, respectively. Coach Bennett added that sophomore guard Addison Reinhold is also a key player. "Addison is strong, tall, and fast," he said. Bennett added that there are aspects of his team that are formidable, beyond their offense. "Our defense is opportunistic; we put pressure on teams and cause turnovers," he said. "And, we do like to run — we have a strong transition game." However, Bennett cautioned that Hoosic Valley will present more of a challenge than its record may indicate. "They are athletic and have good scorers," he said. "They're a solid team." If the Lakers do prevail over Hoosic Valley as their fans predict, they will likely compete against No. 3-seeded Berne-Knox-Westerlo at 7:30 p.m. Friday Feb. 27 in the B-K-W High School gym in Berne. In the meantime, Berne-Knox-Westerlo will need to defeat No. 14-seeded Schoharie on Feb. 24. LAKER BOYS vs. DUANESBURG Meanwhile, the Lake George Boys Basketball Team, seeded No. 15 in Section II Class C, has a substantial challenge, as they will be competing against No. 2-seed Duanesburg at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 on the Eagles' court. As of Feb. 23, the Lakers are 9-11 overall and 5-8 in the Adirondack League, while Duanesuburg is 17-3 overall and 10-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Lakers' offense is led by senior point guard Daniel Weaver with his scoring average of 15.9 points per game and senior forward Richard Stroup with 15.1 points per game. Weaver also leads his team in shooting accuracy, as he sinks 45 percent of his field goals, 36 percent of his three-point shots and 66 percent of his free throws. Sophomore center Martin Farrell leads the Lakers in rebounds, tallying an impressive 11.3 per game, and Stroup follows with 7.3 per game. The team has an impressive record of executing steals, as Stroup averages 4.3 per game, followed by sophomore point guard Eli Brown with 4.1 per game, and Weaver with 3.2 per game. Both Stroup and Brown have tallied 81 steals this season.
