Top seeds hold form in Class D boys quarterfinals

PLATTSBURGH | The Section VII Class D boys basketball semifinals are set after four decisive quarterfinal victories Saturday, Feb. 21. Bolton welcomes Seton Catholic, while Wells hosts Schroon Lake/Newcomb in semifinal games at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25. The winners will meet in the Class D final at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Clinton Community College. #1 BOLTON 98 #8 BOQUET VALLEY 50 BOLTON LANDING | Bolton used a 49-11 first half and balanced scoring to defeat Boquet Valley 98-50. Liam Foy led the top-seeded Eagles (20-1) with 32 points in a double-double performance as Bolton placed five players in double figures. Jace Hubert scored 18 points, Jaxon Egloff added 17, Jacob French finished with 14 and Will Hens chipped in 13. Bolton limited Boquet Valley's top scorers early, holding Carson Leibeck and Zander Lobdell to a combined four points in the first half. The duo found success late, with Leibeck finishing with 18 points and Lobdell adding 17 for the Griffins. #2 WELLS 68 #7 JOHNSBURG/MINERVA 49 WELLS | Chase Brooks scored 26 points as second-seeded Wells earned a 68-49 win over No. 7 Johnsburg/Minerva. Hunter Passmore added 21 points for the Wildcats (18-2), and Oliver Stuart and Kegan Johnson each finished with 10 points. Johnsburg/Minerva was led by Liam McKinney, who scored 22 points and recorded six steals. Nick Sauer-Jones added 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, and Aaden Sauer-Jones contributed seven points and nine assists. #3 SCHROON LAKE/NEWCOMB 54 #6 CHAZY 41 SCHROON LAKE | Logan Phillips dropped a game-high 14 points, and Schroon Lake/Newcomb outlasted Chazy 54-41 to move on. Daniel Pelkey and Camden Lamphear also finished in double figures for the Wild Huskies with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Pelkey buried four of Schroon Lake/Newcomb's seven 3-pointers. Cooper Cross anchored Chazy with 11 points, and Aiden Howell supplied the Eagles with 10 "Great, hard-fought game between quality opponents," Wild Huskies head coach David Pelkey said. "Schroon Lake pulled away with a strong defensive showing in the second half." #4 SETON CATHOLIC 73 #5 KEENE 52 PLATTSBURGH | Michael Mannix scored a game-high 36 points as Seton Catholic advanced to the semifinals with a 73-52 win over Keene. Oliver Hughes added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Knights, who used unselfish, team-oriented ball movement to pull away. Seton Catholic finished with 16 assists as a team. "We shared the ball well and shot it well, which is what you need to win games this time of year," Knights head coach Larry Converse said. "We have to continue to play together and stay composed now in the playoffs." Asa Sprague led Keene with 20 points. Peter Robjent scored 17 and Sam Crowl added 13 for the fifth-seeded Beavers.
