Lake George students discover their voice through service

LAKE GEORGE | As a proud FranklinCovey Lighthouse School, Lake George follows the Leader in Me framework, empowering students to see themselves as leaders every day. Rooted in the principles of The 8th Habit, the program teaches that finding your voice happens at the intersection of talent, passion, need, and conscience. At Lake George Elementary School, leadership is not reserved for a select few, it is intentionally woven into the fabric of the school through student-led initiatives, service opportunities, collaborative projects, and real-world learning experiences. The recent Volunteer Fair, centered on the theme "Finding My Voice Through Service," was a powerful example of how the district creates authentic opportunities for students to lead, serve, and grow. Throughout the day, students rotated through hands-on service stations representing different community organizations. Rather than simply learning about volunteerism, they experienced it. Each activity allowed students to choose a cause that resonated with them and create something meaningful to support it. At one station, students designed crafts for local nursing home residents, bright artwork and handmade decorations meant to bring warmth during the winter months. At another, students assembled toys for animals awaiting adoption at a local shelter. In yet another space, thoughtful messages and handmade cards were created for active-duty military members, reminding them that their service and sacrifice are deeply appreciated. The Volunteer Fair also incorporated an Olympic spirit. Students took part in outdoor winter fun, from sledding to Olympic-style challenges that promoted teamwork, determination, and plenty of laughter. The physical component added an important layer to the day, reminding students that service and celebration can go hand in hand. By choosing the activity that mattered most to them, students weren't just completing a project, they were discovering their voice. They learned that leadership doesn't always mean standing at the front of the room. Sometimes it looks like quietly writing a heartfelt note. Sometimes it sounds like laughter echoing across a snowy hill. "I think sometimes people look at school and just see academics," said Zoe Chodak, LGES School Counselor. "But here at Lake George, our kids are learning how to notice when someone needs help, how to use what they're good at to step up, and how to do the right thing. That's really what finding your voice is, and when they start to understand that, you can see the difference they're making."
