Three-part EquiDay Series at Miner Institute returns in March

CHAZY | Miner Institute has announced the return of its annual three-part EquiDay events coming up in March. EquiDay has evolved from a single Saturday event into a three-part series. As always, the events are free and open to the public with no pre-registration required, but feel free to let organizers of attendance via email: lassell@whminer.com, phone: 518-846-7121, ext. 120 or through social media. Light refreshments will be served at the in-person events, which will be held at the Joseph C. Burke Education and Research Center at Miner Institute, 586 Ridge Rd. in Chazy. PART ONE: Monday, March 9, 6 p.m. This session will open the series with a Zoom presentation. Miner alumnus and Masterson Method Certified Practitioner ShyAnne Winter will speak on the Equine Nervous System. This fundamental of equine behavior and physical health has made "nervous system" a current buzzword in many circles of training and management for good reason. The Masterson Method of equine bodywork appealed to ShyAnne as a practice because it works with the horse's nervous system to help it release tension and improve body awareness. She'll help us understand some of the terminology, what normal function should look like, and how owners can read and support their horses to feel and perform the best they can. Auditorium doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for registration and refreshments. Dr. Dorothee Gilmore of Rivendell Veterinary Care of Lisbon, N.Y., is also on the faculty of SUNY Canton. At least a few times per year, a major equine disease such as EHV-1 makes the news with horses getting very sick or worse, shutting down competitions and travel. Those events get our attention, but the day-to-day care and local issues are more likely to derail your plans. She'll discuss biosecurity and health considerations for horse owners that day. The second speaker is AFA Certified Farrier Brendan Venne presenting on Hoof Balance - A Farrier's Perspective. Recently returned to the Champlain Valley, Brendan worked extensively in southern New England after graduating from the rigorous and comprehensive Journeyman Farrier Course at Heartland Horseshoeing School in Missouri. The best part of having highly qualified professionals in the room is the elevation of knowledge. This is a short, moderated panel discussion on the role that farriers and vets play in a horse's health and how promoting good collaboration benefits everyone. PART THREE: Monday, March 16, 6-8 p.m. Ida Anderson Norris will speak at the BERC auditorium at Miner Institute. When we consider that a horse can feel a fly land on them, it is no wonder that even small movements or shifts in a rider's balance can affect them. Ida will begin with a presentation and then guide the audience through a series of activities to improve our awareness of what our bodies are doing and how we can fix what isn't working and feel even more comfortable on our rides. Whether you're wanting to stay more balanced and relaxed on the trail, get a straighter center line in your dressage test, keep the best trot on the rail for your Hunter Under Saddle Class or get tighter around those barrels, Rider Biomechanics is for you.
