Wbg.-LG wrestler Ben Miner wins NYS tourney berth

GLENS FALLS | Eleven hours after he began competing in the Feb. 14 Section II wrestling tournament, Warrensburg-Lake George senior Ben Miner proved his endurance and grit as he took on Salem-Cambridge's Henry Dill, the pending No. 2 medalist in the 157-pound weight class. Winning this concluding "True Second Place" match 10-2, Miner earned a berth in the state high school wrestling championship tournament, set for Feb. 27-28 in Albany's Times Union Center. Miner had lost one match in the semifinals, but his conditioning, endurance, and resolve led to his earning a coveted berth in the state tournament. "We're fortunate to have a wrestler going to the states, considering our limited roster this year," said Warrensburg-Lake George coach Mark Trapasso, who is now in his 31st year as head coach of varsity wrestling at Warrensburg High School. Other Warrensburg-Lake George wrestlers to take such an arduous path to a state wrestling tournament were Ethan York, a member of last year's team, and Hunter Nemec, a 2022 Warrensburg graduate. The two schools' most prominent achievement in the sport was when Tristen Hitchcock of Warrensburg won the 2022 New York State High School Heavyweight title and was a finalist the following year. Hitchcock is now a junior at West Point, wrestling on the U.S. Army's collegiate team. The Warrensburg-Lake George team's 285-pound athlete, senior Glenn Potter, won four matches and lost two in the Section II tournament to place fourth in the heavyweight class, after losing a 0—1 decision to a Hoosick Falls wrestler who took third place. "Glenn finished really strong," Trapasso said. "He had a really good day." At 132 pounds, junior Landon Duers won sixth place despite wrestling all day with an injured hand. Last week, Duers won the Class D championship at his weight. "As a junior, Duers has another year, and we will go far next year," Trapasso said. After a month off to heal his hand, he will be back, wrestling off-season." Also competing in the Section II tournament for Warrensburg-Lake George after placing high in the Feb. 7 Class D tournament were W-LG wrestlers Ledger Boutin at 126 pounds, Kawliga Duell at 138 pounds and Colton Stannard at 144 pounds. The tournament was held in Glens Falls' Harding Mazzotti Arena, also known as the Glens Falls Civic Center. "It was a good day," Trapasso concluded, referring to his athletes' individual performances at the Section II/NYS Qualifier tournament.
