Stec addresses low Medicaid reimbursement at Legislative Budget Hearing

ALBANY | During a joint Legislative Budget Hearing on Medicaid and Health today, Sen. Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) urged state Medicaid Director Amir Bassiri for action concerning the low Medicaid reimbursement rates and the need for an update to the rebasing formula for nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In his exchange with Director Bassiri, Stec spotlighted the 2024 closure of United Helpers in Canton. United Helpers was the sole assisted living facility in St. Lawrence County and cited the poor Medicaid reimbursement rates as the precipitating factor in having to shutter its doors. New York State hasn't rebased Medicaid rates for nursing homes and assisted living facilities since 2007. That means that reimbursement rates are still based on 2007 costs, which are far below present-day costs and needs. "The poor Medicaid reimbursement rates have led to a crisis in the nursing home and assisted living fields," Stec said. "I've heard from personnel at facilities across the 45th Senate District that because these rates have not kept up with costs, it's harder than ever to provide the quality, compassionate care vulnerable New Yorkers need and deserve. "Today's budget hearing was a vital way to directly address the need for an increase in rate reimbursement with the state Medicaid Director. Increasing this rate, quite literally, will make the difference in whether or not nursing homes and assisted living facilities inside our Senate District and across our state can remain operational," he added.
