Beekmantown edges SLP for Section VII girls hockey crown

PLATTSBURGH | Rhianna Gilligan scored the go-ahead goal with 4:49 remaining, and Beekmantown held off Saranac Lake/Lake Placid for a 2-1 victory in the Section VII girls hockey championship Monday, Feb. 9, at Stafford Ice Arena. Gilligan intercepted a failed clearing attempt just inside the blue line and fired a wrist shot from the high slot over the blocker and into the top-left corner to break a 1-1 tie late in the third period. Saranac Lake/Lake Placid pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker following a Beekmantown icing with 1:40 remaining. Beekmantown goalie Kori-Lynn Lamoy immediately made a glove save on a shot from the top of the circle, but SLP did not record another shot on goal despite four offensive-zone faceoffs in the final 100 seconds. Beekmantown opened the scoring with 13:37 to go in the second period on a power-play goal by Meegan Burdo. Eleanna Fullum rang a shot off the near-side post, regained the puck near her skates and kicked it toward goal. A rebound chance was denied, but Burdo was there to jam home the loose puck. SLP answered only 1 minute, 38 seconds later when Emma Clark took a pass at the blue line and scored from the top of the left circle to tie the game. The teams played a scoreless first period, with Beekmantown holding a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Unofficially, both teams finished with 18 shots. Gilligan was named Beekmantown's Player of the Game by event organizers, while Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill earned the honor for SLP. Beekmantown advanced to face Section X champion Potsdam in the state quarterfinals Monday, Feb. 16, at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall Ice Arena. Beekmantown recently dropped a 4-2 decision to Potsdam on Feb. 7, but the teams split their two earlier meetings this season. Potsdam earned a 2-1 win in the second round of the SLP Tournament on Dec. 28, while Beekmantown responded with a 2-1 non-league victory on Jan. 30. Last season, Beekmantown reached the state semifinals and was edged 1-0 by Adirondack United at Utica University's Nexus Center, with the deciding goal coming in the final minute of regulation. Adirondack United went on to win the NYSPHSAA regional championship for a second straight year.
