Sarah Musto wins regional girls wrestling title

MECHANICVILLE | Warrensburg-Lake George wrestler Sara Musto won the championship of the 120-pound weight class of the small school Section II Qualifier Wrestling Tournament held Feb. 6 at Mechanicville High School. Musto is a Lake George High School senior. Musto's victory advances her to the Section II Championship/State Qualifier Girls Wrestling Tournament, to be held Monday, Feb. 16 in the Guilderland High School gym. Musto was one of four members of the Burghers competing in the tournament. The Warrensburg-Lake George girls team tied for 8th place with Coxsackie-Athens among 22 schools entered in the small-school tournament, quite high for entering merely four wrestlers. A wrestler for merely 15 months, Musto fought her way to the championship of her weight class. Musto was 3-0 for the day, Mya Rumble was 2-2, and both Adalynn Smith and Savannah Lehman were 1-3. Adalynn Smith placed sixth in the tournament at 94 pounds. Musto pinned Gianna Roglieri of Glens Falls in two minutes and 28 seconds in the finals to earn the championship. Roglieri was aggressive from the outset, attempting several takedowns, but Musto defended her stance. On Roglieri's final takedown attempt, she was pushing toward Musto, who redirected Roglieri's momentum to lift her and put her on her back, pinning her with a headlock. In the semifinals, Musto pinned Elizabeth Davis of Greenville in 1:03, and in the quarterfinals, Musto pinned Arie Shannon of Corinth in 4:05. Adalynn Smith fought her way into the semifinals, where she lost by a technical fall to Brooke Connors of Mechanicville-Stillwater, who went on to take the championship. In the fifth-place finals, Adalynn was pinned by Maya Santana of Rensselaer in 1:06, and Adalynn took sixth place. In the quarterfinals, Adalynn pinned Addison Wilson of Salem-Cambridge in 4:42. In the quarterfinals, Molly Maxwell of Salem-Cambridge pinned Savannah Lehman in 2:05, and Mya Rumble lost by technical fall to Rileigh Dean of Canajoharie-Fort Plain. Burghers coach Luke Musto said he was proud of his team's performance. "Our girls wrestled tough," he said. "It was a great tournament, and we did well."
