Wbg.-Lake George wrestlers take 2nd in Class D tourney

CAMBRIDGE | Warrensburg-Lake George wrestlers pulled off a remarkable postseason feat Feb. 7 as they took second place in the Section II Class D wrestling tournament, regardless of the Burghers' fielding merely 10 competitors due to a low turnout this year for the sport. "We were surprised —we didn't expect to score that high," head coach Mark Trapasso said. "But we wrestled really tough and got a lot of pins.' Three of the Burghers were named tournament champions: senior Ben Miner at 157 pounds, junior Landon Duers at 132 pounds, and senior Colton Stannard at 144 pounds. Each of these three wrestlers received byes for their first round and won all three of their matches. In addition, all seven other W-LG wrestlers placed in the tournament, and all their wins were achieved by pins, technical falls, or major decision, which contributed to the team score, leading to the team's second-place title. Miner's championship match was against Henry Dill of Salem-Cambridge, who wrestled in the 2025 state tournament. Miner's 157-pound weight class was competitive, as three of the four top-ranked wrestlers in Section II are in Class D. Third in the tournament was senior Kawliga Duell at 138 pounds, who won three of his four matches. Duell's sole loss, his second match, was to Wyatt Rock of Duanesburg, who eventually won first place. "Kawliga wrestled his best match ever in the consolation finals to earn third place," Trapasso said. "He used some new moves he learned recently — It was fantastic." Placing fourth in the tournament for the Burghers was Ledger Boutin. Coach Trapasso praised his feat because Boutin is a sophomore who is now in his second year on varsity. "Ledger knocked off the No. 3 seed in the first round, and now he's headed for the Section II tournament, which is a great accomplishment," Trapasso said. At 285 pounds, senior Glenn Potter took fourth place in a weight class with many tough competitors. Potter's fourth and final match for the day ended up in a 3-1 double overtime loss to Caden Parker of Hadley-Luzerne who placed third in the tourney. "Glenn will give anybody in his weight class a tough battle next week in the Civic Center, "Trapasso said, referring to the Jan. 14 Section II tournament in Glens Falls' Harding-Mazzotti Arena. "No one will want to wrestle him." Three other W-LG wrestlers placed fifth: sophomores Cody Bacon at 118 pounds and Jason Briggs at 190 pounds, plus senior Cody LeBarron at 165 pounds. If a wrestler scheduled to compete in one of these three weight classes of the Section II tournament drops out, the respective Burgher wrestler will be drafted. Freshman Keaton Vernum placed sixth by winning a technical fall versus Zachary Hoffman of Duaesburg. "We took 10 guys to the tournament, and they all contributed to us taking second place," Trapasso said, noting that he and others assumed that Galway, Maple Hill and Duanesburg would have beaten the Burghers' point total and placed ahead of the W-LG team. "It was a great day for us."
