Bolton boys roll past SL/N, move to 12-0 in MVAC

BOLTON LANDING | Bolton placed four players in double figures and used a dominant first half to secure a 78-49 MVAC boys basketball victory over Schroon Lake/Newcomb on Thursday, Feb. 5. The third-ranked Eagles (16-1, 12-0) opened an early gap and led 44-18 at halftime before extending the margin to 64-30 entering the fourth quarter. Will Hens led Bolton with 21 points, while Jaxon Egloff finished with 18 points and 10 assists. Liam Foy added a double-double with 17 points and more than 10 rebounds, and Jace Hubert contributed 14 points as the Eagles spread the scoring. Schroon Lake/Newcomb (10-7, 9-3) was paced by senior Nathan Melville, who scored 17 points. Thirteen of those came in the second half, and Melville knocked down a game-high three 3-pointers. The Wild Huskies made four of their eight 3-pointers in the closing minutes. Freshman Daniel Pelkey and junior Camden Lamphier scored nine points apiece for Schroon Lake/Newcomb. GIRLS SCHROON LAKE | Bolton closed the game on a decisive fourth-quarter run to defeat Schroon Lake/Newcomb 48-39 on Friday, Feb. 6, clinching the MVAC Division II title. Trailing by five points with four minutes remaining, Bolton used a surge to take control down the stretch. Jadynn Egloff and Maille Kelley sparked the rally as the Eagles erased the deficit and pulled away late. Egloff finished with a game-high 25 points to lead Bolton, while Kelley added 10. Ella Hens chipped in 11 as Bolton outscored Schroon Lake/Newcomb 16-4 in the fourth quarter. Schroon Lake/Newcomb was led by Taylor Bush with 11 points. Hope Armstrong, Olivia Hartwell and Carly Smith each scored eight for the Wild Huskies, who were limited offensively in the closing minutes. Defensively, Halley LaBrecque held Schroon Lake/Newcomb's leading scorer to eight points, according to Bolton head coach Luke Schweickert. Bolton carried a 25-23 lead into halftime before Schroon Lake/Newcomb used a strong third quarter to briefly move in front. With the win, Bolton improved to 5-0 in MVAC Division II play. Schroon Lake/Newcomb fell to 3-2, while Boquet Valley stands at 2-3 and Crown Point is 0-5 in the division.
