Local cheer squads turn in strong weekend

PLATTSBURGH | Northeastern Clinton and Northern Adirondack turned in strong performances during the second weekend of the competitive cheerleading season, while several other local squads showed early progress across two invitationals on Saturday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 1. Northeastern Clinton placed fourth in Class C at both the Devil Nation Invitational at Columbia High School and Scotia-Glenville Spirit Invitational, competing on back to back days and posting clean routines with no deductions in either performance. Northern Adirondack followed a runner-up finish in the Co-Ed division Saturday with a victory Sunday at Scotia-Glenville. The Bobcats increased their difficulty and improved execution throughout the weekend, which translated into higher scores. Saranac earned a fifth-place finish Saturday in Class C, hitting a zero-deduction routine in its first competition back as an all-girl team after several seasons in the Co-Ed division. Moriah placed third in Class D on Sunday despite competing short-handed, as the Vikings debuted a revamped routine that showed significant improvement from the previous week. Beekmantown competed at both events, finishing seventh in Class C on Saturday and ninth on Sunday, while Peru placed fourth in the Co-Ed division at Columbia. Schalmont won the Class C title at both invitationals. Colonie captured the Co-Ed crown Saturday, and Galway claimed first place in Class D on Sunday. The Section VII championships will be contested at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Plattsburgh State Field House, according to Section VII Executive Director Matt Walentuk. — Saturday, Jan. 31 Devil Nation Invitational Class C 1.
