Schroon Lions Club facilitates vision screenings for local students

SCHROON LAKE | For years, the Schroon Lions have helped their community in a number of initiatives; one of them is their SEE project, designed to detect vision disorders in children at an early and treatable stage. OVERVIEW For the past 12 years, the Lions Club of Schroon Lake, in partnership with Kids Sight USA, has been dedicated to offering free vision screenings primarily for pre-K and kindergarten students in numerous area schools. Each fall, several Schroon Lions members coordinate with local schools to schedule these screenings, ensuring that they reach as many children as possible. This ongoing collaboration reflects the strong commitment of the Schroon Lake Lions to supporting the health and well-being of children within the community. SCREENING IMPACT AND REACH Since 2022, the vision screening program has tested more than 1,200 students. In the current year alone, 371 students across eight Essex County schools have been screened, resulting in 36 recommendations for further testing. These numbers highlight both the significant reach of the initiative and the consistent efforts made to identify vision issues at an early, treatable stage. IMPORTANCE OF EARLY VISION SCREENINGS The non-invasive screenings provided by the Lions Club play a critical role in reducing childhood blindness. By enabling early detection and treatment of common vision disorders, these screenings help prevent conditions leading to amblyopia. Amblyopia, often referred to as "lazy eye," is marked by poor vision in one eye that did not develop normal sight during early childhood. It affects roughly two to three percent of the population, making it one of the most common vision disorders among children. BENEFITS OF EARLY INTERVENTION Addressing vision problems early—especially during infancy or early childhood—yields the best outcomes for correcting amblyopia. Many children and adolescents suffer from undiagnosed or untreated vision impairments, and if left unaddressed by age seven, these issues may become permanent. That is why early identification and intervention are essential in ensuring positive results for affected children. SCREENING EFFECTIVENESS The Lions SEE (ScreenEyesEarly) screenings are specifically designed to detect risk factors for vision disorders. With a sensitivity of 80 percent and an accuracy rate of 95 percent, these screenings are highly effective at identifying vision problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. These impressive rates demonstrate the program's value in promoting early intervention and supporting children's long-term eye health.
